A Look at Some Head Coach Possibilities

Earlier, we posted a link to Ives Garcep’s top choices for who is in the running to be the first Head Coach for Sounders FC. Plus, we know that Peter Vermes won’t be the coach (and Adrian Hanauer has said that Sounders FC only inquired about talking with Vermes).

The formal interviewing process is to begin this week. Here is some background on the a few of the top choices…

  • Sigi Schmid is the current coach for the Columbus Crew. He previously coached for 5 years with the LA Galaxy and was Chris Henderson’s coach at UCLA.
  • Paul Mariner is the New England Revolution’s top assistant. He was a candidate for the Chicago Fire position earlier this year and told the Arizona Republic that he is interested in the position. It’s been confirmed that Sounders FC received permission from the Revoilution to talk about the coaching position with Mariner.
  • Brian Schmetzer is the current head coach for the Seattle Sounders USL team and has held the position since 2002.
  • John Spencer is an assistant coach for the Houston Dynamo. He was offered the head coaching position with the Chicago Fire, but the salary was “not up to par”.
  • Fernando Clavijo was suggested as a candidate, but rumors have it that he is NOT on the short list.
