got to admit, i don’t know a whole lot about most of the players

with the exception of a few stand out names, (ruiz, olsen, jaqua, gallardo) i don’t know much about the rest of the players. as i mentioned when is started this blog, i have had a hard time getting into the MLS historically. while the level of play has improved dramatically over the last 5 years i think, not having a local team to support has seriously dampened my enthusiasm for the league and therefore my knowledge of most of these players.

from reading the message boards however, there doesn’t seem to be a obvious “steal” out there, which is no surprise. their seems to be more of an opinion of who NOT to take. Ruiz is on that list due to his attitude, as well as khano smith, the striker from bermuda. just looking at smiths tally of 8 goals in 85 appearences, i would say that he isn’t really deserving of the striker title.

so it is going to be a huge learning curve for me (and many others i suppose) on who the players are that we select. many of you die hards out there are going to have to educate me on the histories of these guys. this is one of the few times that i have very little opinion of who we select. normally, if i know even the littlest of information, i am happy to form a very strong opinion and toute it as fact ;-) . but for now, i will let chris and adrian do their job.

the only thing that must be mentioned however is that i think we make the biggest effort to draft solid defenders. most teams can manage to play a style to score goals if they so chose, but if you can’t defend, what is the point.

But the strategy clearly is to get cheap, or young, talent. Old and overpaid doesn’t work.

With that in mind, I think we should look at Marco Pappa and Rohan Ricketts, who could both be expensive (Ricketts is at $200K), but are young and extremely talented midfielders. If we get either of those guys, I’ll be thrilled.

Clearly, the league is savvy to our Ljundberg DP pick. Teams left unprotected all sorts of guys who fill his position.

Clearly, we do need to lock down some defenders. Jeff Parke is a big name from Red Bulls, but he also earns a ton, and he’s a serious flight risk. (To Europe).

I advocated for Montero instead of Ljundberg for youth related reasons. This seems like a chance to get both; it might cost us some money, but not DP range.

I think the draft will tell us a lot about our franchise. If we make more personel decisions for marketing reasons (Carlos Ruiz, Ante Razov, Clint Mathis), then I think we’re in for a lot of pain.

m_____s said it best – “But the strategy clearly is to get cheap, or young, talent. Old and overpaid doesn’t work.” this works wonders (if done correctly)… the Arsène Wenger approach. It can help your team in the long run as well.

As for not knowing much about MLS players… I’m in the same boat – “while the level of play has improved dramatically over the last 5 years i think, not having a local team to support has seriously dampened my enthusiasm for the league and therefore my knowledge of most of these players.”

I’d have to agree.. though the league has improved it is by no means great. For instance – I watch the EPL and Bundesliga and I obviously have no local team in England or Germany (I’m Norwegian/German by background, so German clubs could count I suppose). Those leagues, like the Italian and Spanish, are just really good. They are fun to watch – no matter your allegiance. MLS is… not so much. It mostly revolves around either really liking footie in the US (though most people I know here watch foreign leagues… not MLS) and/or having a local (or at least State) team.
