Gold Cup: US to Play Grenada in Seattle

Posted by Mike on April 2, 2009 · Under International, Qwest Field · View Comments

We mentioned that Qwest Field would be hosting two International Gold Cup matches on July 4th- one including the USA. The matches have been announced: USA vs. Grenada and Haiti vs. Honduras.

CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer noted in reply if Sounders ticket sales was a factor in allocating a USA game in Seattle…

It was part of the overall mix and picture. The results of Sounders FC parallel Seattle’s evolution as a venue. We ask who can draw well? It’s a component that makes Seattle a viable venue. But the presence of an MLS club there gives us a structure to work with. We think the success of the MLS there is great but it’s not specifically the reason. It’s always been a great market. We don’t have a large staff but the presence of the MLS infrastructure there helps.

kent- I should say that it has not been confirmed that this is the third “TBA Match”.

    Other friendlies are being discussed…

kent, where did you hear that? the gold cup has nothing to do with the sounders or MLS. As far as i have heard, this is NOT your third ticket. so far, only 2 are accounted for. chelsea and MLS cup.

as for the match itself…. it will be fun to drink some beers and watch our national team likely put in a ton of goals on the 4th of july. as for a great game… well lets just say it will likely not be a classic.

Thank goodness! I’m so sick of the crying, whining, wailing and gnashing of teeth over our incredible Fieldturf surface. Our stadium has turf. Get over it.
