Sounders FC vs. the Golden Boot Leaders

Seattle has faced the top four leaders of MLS’s Golden Boot honors already this year.

Chicago’s Brian McBride and the Wizards’ Josh Wolff have each netted 6 goals in the 2009 Campaign. LA’s Landon Donovan has 5 goals and 3 assists and Real Salt Lake’s Robbie Findlay has scored 5 goals and added two assists.

But how have these threatening goal scorers done against Sounders FC?

The four noted above have a total of 22 goals and 5 assists. Against Seattle… Zero and Zero.

Looking at Shots on the year, the four have a combined 38 shots. When they have played against the Rave Green… Donovan and Findlay each had one shot; and only Landon’s was on goal.

The Sounders Defense anchored by Tyrone Marshall & Jhon Kennedy Hurtado in the middle and led by Kasey Keller has given up only 6 goals this year. Only Chivas USA has given up fewer (5).

The Rave Green’s +6 goal differential is second in MLS based on its limiting of goals scored against. Sounders FC are found in the middle of the table in 7th for scoring 12 goals.

There was a bunch of concern leading up to the begining of the season that the Seattle defense would be suspect. As we are now 9 games into 2009, it’s quite easy to point out that the Sounders defense has become the cornerstone of this squad.

So basically what you’re saying is that the Sounders have shut down the biggest guns in MLS. :D
