USMNT – spoiler alert

if we are being honest, the US Mens National Team getting into the semi finals of the Confed Cup was a lot of luck…

but beating a full strength spain squad to get to the finals is AMAZING. this isn’t just any spain team. spain are always good. but this is a spanish team that
- has HAD won (no draws) their last 15 games.

- was ranked #1 in the world

- is the defending european champions

- had a full squad… (torres, villa, capdevila, casillas, ramos, pique, xavi, xavi, fabregas, riera, puyol)

i watched bits of the game while at work, so i am not really qualified to say how much we deserved it or not. but from what i can tell, we held our nerve, defended brilliantly, and took advantage of our few chances. and there is nothing bad about any of that. nobody would expect us to get 10 shots on goal against a team known for dominating possession, so you just have to make sure the few chances you get, you take them well. and we did that tonight.

only bummer on the night was the bradley red card.  he is an important player who will miss the final now.

for those that watched the match…. please comment on your assessment of the play.

A mix of good defending and Spain not bringing their shooting boots won the game.  When you look at the stats your first opinion would make you think they wrote the scores down backwards.  I think it was 8 shots on goal by spain to our 2.

A very good day for the mens team – Howard was great in goal, with a whole lot of activity on our end of the pitch.  The red was – how do you say – BS!

Need I remind everyone that with the Sunday game, Colorado is without Conor Casey for Sunday’s match.  The only downside is that kick for the cup is 11:30am and Sounders kick is at 1pm!!!!  Can we slide the game 30 min and put the match up on the big screens at Qwest?!?!?!?!

Howard and Gooch were both amazing — always where they needed to be.  According to all the stats and beauty of play, Spain was the better team.  Yet the US held together, and they were the ones who broke through.  Twice.

It is going to KILL me to miss the final!!

we got to watch out for Cunningham, (sp?) he is still fiesty.  I was so glad USA advanced, that keeps Casey & Donovan and all the other MLS talent away, dropping points for their club team helps our relatively International-less team.  I love it when rooting for the national team helps the Sounders.
