a few sunday morning bits

not too much to report on right now with the sounders in between USOC matches. if we hadn’t made it into the final round of 16 with portland, it would have been a long two weeks. as it was, we had that match last wednesday and another this tuesday. i don’t suspect you will see too much of a line up change against KC at starfire. maybe a little bit of alonso and zakuani if they are fit, but probably off the bench.

almost as good as us playing and getting a win however, was our two closes rivals (below us) in the standings getting a draw this weekend. RSL and Colorado and RSL could only muster a 1-1 draw each. that sees us 4 points clear of the rapids now….my how things have changed. just two weeks ago, they looked to blow past us with all those games in hand, and they haven’t done a damn thing with them. no time to rest on our laurels though b/c it is so tight, we know what can happen if you lose a few or draw 6 in a row as it were. and don’t look now, but LAG has decided that winning is the new tying. after tying 11 of their first 15 games of the season, they have now won 4 of their last 6 and are equal with the rapids on points, albeit having played an extra game. a win next saturday is huge for us, but a los may be the start of a dogfight for the final 2 playoff spots in the west

the US played Grenada last night at qwest in front of about 15,000. i am trying to decide if that is a good turnout or not.

on one hand it is the US on the 4th of July. but on the other, it is against grenada… on the 4th of july. many people have traditions for bbq’s, family, fireworks etc. and with the game not finishing until 8 getting to those other things may not have been an option

so 15,000 seems like a decent turn out to me. anyone go to the match and can talk to the atmosphere? i heard evans got a great reception from the crowd when he came off the bench, and every time he touched the ball after that as well. there was some guy named adu that got a goal. i remember hearing about him years ago. before many of you were born probably. i didn’t watch the match b/c in part of my summer ritual to save a whole $5 a month in the summer, i cancel FSC from june to late august. didn’t realize this was on FSC until the last minute.

well, i am going to take my $12.50 that i saved this summer, buy a few brews and get burned in the back yard.

hope your 4th was great

Fun atmosphere at the games, but 15,000 felt a little odd after getting used to crowds twice that size.

Also, I didn’t realize the Seattle area had such a large Honduran population, but apparently they do.  (Oh, and they like to drink beer.  Just fyi.)

Evans looked pretty good but didn’t have much to do.  He played rightback, and most of our attacks went up the left, with Pearce apparently as the designated go-forward fullback.  So Brad mostly hung around in the back and twiddled his thumbs with the CBs.  He did come very close to getting an assist, though.  (I do think the cheers every time he came near the ball may have rattled him a bit.  But hey, he’s our guy.)

We were at the game with kids and their friends and a couple of our friends who’d never been to a soccer game before.  They had a great time.  Probably not Sounders STH great, but they’ll go tell their friends that a soccer game at Qwest is a good experience.

(Because you can’t evangelize too much.)
