what do you make of this comment?
reported by romero over at the times…. by montero after the game on the PK… it must be noted that this is a translation from spanish (not to say that means it is inaccurate) but it doesn’t account for different phrases or terminology that may be translated differently.
Question: How did the play in which you drew the penalty develop?
FM: “I got a pass from Stephen King. My intention was to bring the keeper out. He left the goal, I think you know the standards a South American player has, and in the last minute that was the best choice to get a goal. And thank God we got the good fortune to get the goal.”
so i don’t think we should be knee jerk over this but it doesn’t sound very good does it?
some of the posters over at the times are saying that maybe he was describing the situation where he was expecting contact, and that isn’t the same as a dive. i tend to agree with that, and there is a subtle difference.
i was at the game and i have seen the replay on the sounders site many times and every time i see it i think penalty. the problem with soccer, all around the world, is that in a scenario like that, when the keeper clips the feet, if the player goes down, then penalty, if the player tries to stay on his feet, and stumbles a bit but ultimately stays up, then no penalty. what will 99% of any player anywhere in the world do? well they aren’t going to give it 100% effort to stay up, i can tell you that. it is a problem with the rule, but unfortunately, it can get taken way to far by the players.
so in this case, i really think montero got clipped, and i really think that he didn’t do everything he could to stay on his feet. this play has always been a penalty and it is great when it is for you, and it sucks when it is against.
anyway, after not trying to over analyze it, may just have done that. i would suggest that fredy do learn a different way of describing the play than the words he selected above though, b/c even with my blue and green glasses on, it doesn’t sound good.

doug,
not trying to be combative here…. but honestly, not sure what you are saying.
is your position that diving is just part over the game so i should just get over it?
or are you saying it is terrible and it should be a yellow card? it seems like you get as frustrated as i do.
i agree with a lot of what you are saying, but it doesn’t sound like you totally resolved whether it is part of the game, or if you think it should be a yellow card.
for me, regardless if it is the state of the football game right now, i will not accept it. i hate when it is done against my team, and i hate (maybe even more) when one of my players does it.
