what do you want to get out of tomorrow?

there is something interesting with tomorrows friendly. the more i talk to friends about the game, the more i realize that there are a lot of different expectations of what people want out of the game.

one friend… let’s call him matt, just wants nothing more than to see the stars of chelsea. probably every single chelsea player, down to their second team, plays on their national team…  there is no doubt they are stars in the soccer community and in most other places in the world they would get mobbed walking down the street. he isn’t a chelsea fan to be sure, but he will surely buy the commemorative scarf, and i wouldn’t be surprised if he bought a chelsea jersey with lampard or drogba on the back after the match.

another friend, let’s call him james, wants nothing more than the sounders to kick the crap out of chelsea. any kind of loss would be gut wrenching. as bad as losing in the league, maybe worse.

my dear wife… wants an entertaining game. no less, no more. winner doesn’t matter, and a draw wouldn’t matter either. just pure entertainment.

what about me?

well i guess i fall more in line with james, but not quite so passionate. there is no doubt i want to win this game. it would bring me a lot of joy to be honest. but it is just a friendly against a team full of international stars. pick any one of them and their salary would pay for our whole team.  but am i star struck? no i am not. with the exception of essien, i don’t have much of a fondness for many of the players. in fact i do have the time to go to that fan fest tonight…. but there are a hundred things i would rather do. i would rather go watch the sounders warm up to be honest. why would i care about the opposing team? yes, i know the answer for many is that you rarely get this opportunity… but it just doesn’t do it for me.

does it do it for you?

the last thing i will say that i expect…. for our boys to NOT be starstruck. yes, they may get schooled, but don’t back down. win that tackle and if you usually win headers with an elbow in the back…. still try to win your headers with an elbow in the back. sitting back and letting them bring it to you is going to piss me off, and create a 5-0 scoreline.

what do you want and/or expect out of tomorrow? are you matt? james? my wife?

I just want us to play a good game. A win would be awesome, but I’ll be happy so long as we are not embarrassed. I don’t really follow or care about European Soccer, so I can’t say I am all that excited about seeing Chelsea, though I like game so seeing good players is always fun.

Honestly though I am just excited about a packed Qwest Field and a fun game of soccer.

I would love to see our boys play to a 1-1 draw.  The thing is I just hope we don’t get dominated.    I’m wondering if Montero will start to get any more looks after this game.  Apparently MLS-Rumors is reporting that Fullham is already giving Montero some attention.  I knew it would happen, I was just hoping Montero wouldn’t get poached until after his second season with us.

  • Aaron

The thing I care most about from the match is health.  The idea of losing anybody for the season because of an exhibition is too awful to comprehend.

After that,  I obviously want to stay competitive.  Losing won’t bother me, but getting blown out is just embarrassing.

I’m also not particularly starstruck by Chelsea (much more by Barcelona, actually) but will probably head to fan fest just to see what it’s about…

It would be amazing to win, but I don’t think we’ll be “embarrassed” by our team.    I’m more for the James viewpoint =) . . . . I’m looking forward to see Chelsea because they will give us a good game, but I would love for the Sounders to show them what they’ve got!  The fans will be behind our Sounders, and I think that will also impress the European team =).  Now if only they could hear our screams over the damn thundersticks . . . .

  • Steve

    I want a good game.
I want to be able to watch the full game and not get sick or be in too much pain during the game.
I would love to see a win, but it can be spun either way that this is a friendly and it doesn’t matter.
I don’t want to be killed.
I wouldn’t mind Montero to have a bad game actually (I know I know I know bad thing to say, but with Fulham looking at him, this could buy us more time with him).
I want Qwest to be the loudest ever
I want the shipment of thundersticks to get lost.

    In order of importance:

    1.  I want nobody to get hurt.
    2.  I want our guys to not get humiliated.  (I’d be okay with a score like 2-1.)
    3.  I want to see Anelka and Malouda on the pitch.

    LJ Reply:

Oh yeah, Anelka and Malouda are who I want to stare at too :)

  • yamsmos

me too laurie, i want to see them rolling around in pain on the pitch… ;-)

where did your fascination start with les blues?

we are learning to forgive you for liking the galaxy thing… but the french national team as well? you ask a lot

    Allez les Bleus!    ;-)

I would like to see us play well and hold our own and with style, not necessarily win, but be competetive or as competitive as you can be in an non-competitive match.  I am not a Chelsea supporter but I am semi-star struck and really want to see Drogba and Terry, two of my favorite EPL players. I am also looking forward to seeing the packed Qwest but am somewhat worried about those damn thundersticks.  Don’t use them people, just take them home as a souvenir. If you want to make noise – SCREAM and CHANT and SING or even clap your own two hands. “We don’t need no stinking thundersticks”

i want to see John Terry and i want to see Frank Lampard injured (just kidding…sort of). i’d love for the sounders to win, but it’s basically meaningless. i do want to see Chelsea play, because it’s just that much closer to seeing Liverpool play. my general hope is that Chelsea is relegated, but it’s still exciting to see international stars that don’t pop round seattle every week.

    Barcelona will be amazing, though.

  • Graham

As an Englishman living here in Seattle I am looking forward to seeing some players with some real skill (Sounders players you know who you are!) My expectations are not high for a great game though as this is Chelsea’s first game of the their new season and they will be rusty to say the least. I want a Sounders win and no injuries.

  • Mark

I agree with your wife.  I just want to see an entertaining game.

I know that Chelsea will not be playing their hardest or their best, so a win will no be hugely rewarding.  The best result of this match has already happened, a sellout Quest Field crowd.  This, more than a win, will stick in the minds of the famous Europeans who will play here on Saturday.  Chelsea players will see that there is a hunger for a good game of soccer (football) in the US.  Also, we can show them that Seattle is the capital of Soccer in the US.

If only we could do something about those damn thundersticks…

  • Patrick

While an entertaining game would be a fortunate outcome, there is no doubt to me that a Sounders win would be the most entertaining to watch.

Even more than a win, the impact of having not one, but two recognized European clubs on our side of the ocean for friendly games (and the very cool Emerarld Spire as a gift) shows the growth of soccer in the US and the success of the Sounders as a franchise to create a situation like this.

The only thing that would dull the luster of tomorrow’s fun would be a huge Chelsea blowout.

  • Joe

Whatever type of match it takes to convince as many of the 67,000+ who don’t go to regular Sounders matches to come back for more or buy season tix next season. That’s what’s needed.

I want that crowd tomorrow to get crazy. I think a high-scoring match w/ the Sounders pulling it out in the end would do the trick. (4-3?)

  • jt

I want every Sounders player on the pitch at some point.  I want to see the new ‘keeper in a setting where we care, but giving up a goal isn’t going to cost us.  I want everyone healthy and rested for Tuesday to kick the Dynash*t….

I want to see how many season ticket deposits are made after this match, and after Barca – can we get half the upper deck sold for next year?  How long is the list now?

I also want Toronto and New England to win this weekend, since I’m able to ask for anything :D .

  • ryan

WOW!!!! really guys? a draw or a sounders win? How does that help us exactly? Not trying to be mean, but it sounds a lot like you guys are being selfish in wanting our Sounders to play an “entertaining” game for the fan to enjoy and not for the overall benefit of the Sounders. How does a far superior Chelsea team coming out and just dinking the ball around for 90 minutes help us? Well, it doesn’t!

The EPL is the best football league by far in my opinion, and Chelsea being a top 4 finish every year makes them one of the best in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Chelsea fan, in fact I despise them, but I love the Sounders more. Because of this, I would like the Sounders to gain something from this friendly and the only way this will happen is if Chelsea completely dominate and dismantle the Sounders everywhere on the pitch. It won’t be fun for Sounders fans to see but it will definitely benefit our beloved team in the long run!

  • Fabio

I agree with Ryan, a lot of fans are being too selfish because they sound like they only want to experience a good match for themselves when if we ever want our Sounders to be the best team in MLS, they need to learn from one of the top teams in the world and in order for the Sounders to learn, they have to be taught a tough lesson.

  • jt

Oh by all means we want a good match.  Experience playing a team that doesn’t pull the standard MLS crap is greatly appreciated.  Do we want a win – HELL YES!!!  Are we going to support the Sounders – any pitch, any day!  Supporters always want a win – without regard of the big picture.  Would I take a Chelsea win to give the Sounders a win at Starfire – YES.

Know what matters, and just have fun with the rest.  It’ll be the first time for the Sounders to have a full Qwest experience.

  • seba

I couldn’t care less about the result W-L-D

    1-We all stay healthy.

    AND

2-As long as we get a goal. Preferably Le Toux or Zakuani.

A 4-1 loss, is fine, but I don’t see our defense sucking that bad.

  • Willmore

I was hoping to see Zhirkov play in his first game for Chelsea, but since he’s not playing, I’ll be rooting for the Sounders all the way.
