DC United President Responds to Hanauer

DC United’s president, Kevin Payne, addressed the comments made by Sounders General Manager Adrian Hanauer today via Steven Goff.

On what Hanauer said…

“I was surprised and disappointed and offended. Adrian uses the word ‘skepticism’ to describe the process, which seems to be implying that it wasn’t on the up-and-up. Which is really an outrageous implication. He is implying that we somehow are receiving favorable treatment. We bid aggressively at every level this year and last year. We did so because we didn’t want to travel if we could possibly avoid it, given the demands of our schedule [Champions League]. Seattle doesn’t have those same demands because this is their first year. Adrian has no knowledge of what we bid or didn’t bid; my guess is that we bid more aggressively than they did.”

“I appreciate that Seattle’s fans are great. Our fans have been great for 14 seasons. It’s really unseemly for Seattle to suddenly show up in MLS and everything should be handed to them. Their crowds are wonderful, we had a great time out there in Seattle [last month], but our crowds are pretty good too and we expect this year we will get far more people in the building than we did last year [8,200]. Last year we played a USL team in the final and, the way our team was going in general at that point, our fans were disappointed and disillusioned. That’s not the case this year. We are going to promote the game very aggressively.”

As a followup, according to Ruiz, Seattle indeed placed a bid for an afternoon game to host the Final.

This is when Hanauer should ‘call’ and he and Kayne should put their cards on the table.  This can easily be settled with a little bit of disclosure and transparency.

  • Steve Edholm

That will never happen, but I agree it should.

That is a pretty good reason to bid agressively.  They do have a brutal schedule, especially around the time of the game all the way up to our MLS game.  I hope it takes its toll on them and we beat them twice in the 10 day span we have with RSL and Houston

  • Ben R

I did not like how Payne said “It’s really unseemly for Seattle to suddenly show up in MLS and everything should be handed to them.”

    A. This is not an MLS game.
    B.  Our USL team has made some very strong showings in the USOC in the past.

We’ve earned a lot of respect in league, it wasn’t handed to us.

my goal, is for us to have an outdoor viewing party that has more people show up than DC united has in the stands..

    i am serious about this.

if the FO doesn’t want to run it, then i am halfway thinking of putting it on myself.

These are the reasons I continue to come back to this site!

Shit- it’s not like I have anything else to do…

Have you contacted the FO about this?!?  With over a month to prepare, I’m sure they could get it done.  It would be the most awesome event ever.

DCU’s start time should allow for pretty much anybody who wanted to attend to make it in time.

    i would totally be there!!

i don’t know how we lost the bid, but we did, and now it’s time to just put it behind us. as long as we win, i’ll be  happy.

  • carella211

oh, and you can me as one of those that would show up to the outdoor viewing party. beating d.c. in the final and having more fans here show up than there, would be a night to remember!

  • jt

I’m soooo close to purchasing airfare….

The question to be asked, if hell were to freeze over, and the Sounders did not make it to the MLS final, would you have wanted to be in DC for the Open Cup final …..?

  • Derek R

If I had the money on hand (college takes its toll) I’d have gotten my plane ticket the day the game was announced.

Count me in for that outdoor viewing party. Sounds like a killer way to show our support.

  • Ben R

I would attend an outdoor viewing party.

  • Giffy

Far more than 8,200? I bet we could have done 30k minimum maybe even more. That being said, no we do not deserved to have it handed to us, but I think we have earned it. But really, the location of the final should be determined by record in the tournament(total goals) or they should do two game thing like they do in many international tournaments with the highest scoring team getting the final half.

Count me down for an outdoor viewing party. In my dreams it would be on the field at Qwest.

  • Gee

That screen at Qwest is very clear too, for how big it is. Oh man this could shake up the soccer world?

As I noted on Twitter- only transparency by US Soccer can settle this drama.

No one likes the new kid on the block. Houston. DC United. Who’s next?
  • Nick

Where would this outdoor viewing party be? Have to be a big screen. If we could get a screen up at marymoor park, that could work, I know they have shown movies there in the past.

  • Roger

The FO already put the US game up on the big screen, let’s get this going and have it shown in Qwest! season ticket holders bring their scarves and get a discounted entry.

    i’m there

  • Nick

Yeah, they put it up there when everyone was going to qwest to watch a sounders game anyway.

I like the concept, but opening and operating a big stadium like qwest to watch a game on the scoreboard costs money, I think we should be able to do this for free in a big open area.

    Joe Reply:

Look at the money we saved by not winning the bid to host the final….

If the Sounders open the doors and sell merchandise and concessions, everyone wins.

  • jt

    Hmm – Qwest Event Center????

The issue doing it outside is the brightness required to do a projector – and time of day just isn’t going to work in our favor.

A good post talking about the USOC bid process:

What irritates me the most is how 14 year old MLS clubs whip out the “first year club” mantra as if it is some charm against being run over by the rave green machine.   None of the MLS teams during their first season or since has ever come close to what Seattle has brought to the table.

All that matters is what you are doing in your current season.  Everything else is history.  The sun never used to set on the British Empire, but now it consists of a couple of islands (no offense to our British brothers).  Basically, a team’s history is only good for filling dead time by the match commentators.

  • Sean Y

Mr. Hanauer made some embarassing remarks that made him, and his organization appear as inept victims.

I’ve had some very positive interactions with DC United supporters in the past.  There’s enough animosity towards Sounders FC from other groups, and comments like this only fuel their cause.  In this case the public dialogue from each front office is a ridiculous waste of time, that can only weaken the game in this country.

I’d like to suggest this is brought up by our membership council at their next meeting.

    Thanks
    -Sean
