the 24th thing i would change with the MLS

ok, maybe there aren’t 24 things i would change, but there are a half dozen for sure (look for that post after the season when there is little to talk about).

but in reading jose’s blog this morning i read something i didn’t know (yes, it happens all the time if you can believe that). the bonus money paid to our 4 sounders players for making the all star team counts against the sounders next years salary cap..!!!!!  WHAT?

that, my friends, is poor. it is poor for many reasons, but the most OBVIOUS reason has to be that the head coach who selects the team has a conflict in interest. give the last two spots to your own players where it may hinder your ability to sign a new player next year? or give it to an opposing team and give them the same problem? (and for the record, i am not accusing dominic of anything by putting montero and hurtado on the all star team, but you can see what i am saying).

i haven’t been able to dig up how much bonus money we are talking about here, and probably, it isn’t that much, but if i dig deep in my brain and pull out some knowledge from those college level philosophy courses that i took on arguments and logic etc., ‘how much’ should not be taken into consideration when you are talking about a conflict of interest. it is either there, or it isn’t. and in this case, it is.

when hanauer was asked about this, his response was “It won’t affect us for the long run,”. well that is good, but the fact that he said “the long run” vs “not at all”, well this is substantial enough to maybe have some effect on us.

i suppose the team(s) with 1 or 0 all stars will say, “hey, that is the price of having a good team and it is a levelling agent for the rest of the league”. well, i can sort of see that, but that is what the draft is for no? the all star game is more of a specticle for the fans more than anything, do we really want teams with more players on the pitch to be penalized over an otherwise meaningless match?

i better stop before i get into the mountain out of a molehile department, if i am not already there.

thoughts? is this just a slow day and i am stretching here? does it really matter? i fear that i already know the responses i am going to get.

SO what’s next – the USOC money also counting???

Why would anyone play if they knew that their “bonus” money would/could negatively impact next season?  I’m almost ready to say that punting that cash to a charity rather than take it on as salary against next season is better over all.

Having a cap is nice since it keeps a lot of teams on a level playing field.  But if you’re going to start counting anything that’s extra (USOC/Worldcup/Concacaf/All-Star) against a team, how are they supposed to afford the players who can do 5 games in 15 days?

“Run Ref Run” – at least the Chinese won’t tolerate a bad ref :-p

I thought it was said wrong when he said that, but if that is true that is the worst rule I have heard of.  I would only see this if it was it was a goal in the contract with the player.  Why would you really want to go and hurt the team?  Should we not vote for anyone now?

I seem to recall this coming up a few weeks past, but I thought that was in regards to the Open Cup.  I’m not fully opposed to the concept of a salary cap, but the honors and rewards earned above and beyond regular season play should not be attributed towards the players’ salary, that should address baseline contractual salary and incentives only which is held at the MLS level and not the team level.

I had never read this before.  If true, it’s just silly.  And probably a throw-away line in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.  (You want 32 players to get paid for the All Star game?  FINE.  But it will count towards the CAP.  SO THERE!)

    MLS is so silly sometimes.

Wonder if the SuperLiga bonuses (which may be a million dollars, except not really) count the same way?  THAT would be interesting.

MLS’ financial structure is just all around bizarre, if not stupid.

MLS needs to step up and pay its players a decent wage if they want to keep their good players.  Sure, the exceptional players will always end up at teams with deep pockets, at least we could avoid having “good” players leaving for ‘effing Norway and Austria.  They also need to scrap the developmental tag and pay those guys a living wage.

The salary cap needs to be raised… and it’s absolutely silly to have the All-Star money count against the team.
