Come Back During the Game for Our Live Blog

The day is here. A mere 5 months and 14 days after Seattle Sounders FC played their first match, they are playing for their first trophy.

DC United and RFK host Seattle this afternoon for the US Open Cup Final. The lead-up to the game has been terse from both ends with no need to recap.

The Match is upon us.

DC is coming off a 1-0 win over Chicago in league play returning to positive form after losing 4 of their last 5, and drawing the fifth. Seattle is 1-1-2 in their last four coming off two consecutive draws on the road at Houston and against Toronto FC at Qwest. They are looking to become the first repeat champions since 1983.

The Sounders find itself in the Championship by defeating the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake in the Play-In Rounds. Then by defeating the Portland Timbers on the road, Kansas City in the Quarterfinals and then the Houston Dynamo in the USOC Semifinals.

For the USOC Final, Seattle will be without their two normal starting central defenders; Jhon Kennedy Hurtado who will be serving an Open Cup suspension and Tyrone Marshall is out with a hamstring injury from this past weekend’s match. Patrick Ianni is a natural replacement for one, but Taylor Graham is suffering an ankle inuury and is not expected to play. With 3 of 4 central defenders out, Sigi Schmid will be creative in his defensive lineup for the Cup Championship.

Check out Sounder at Heart’s suggestion on today’s lineup.

It’s true that Seattle may be an expansion club, but some Sounders have USOC Final experience. Osvaldo Alonso, Nate Jaqua, James Riley, and Pete Vagenas have all appeared in the Trophy Match.

The USOC notes that only 5 “International” players are eligible to play in Cup matches. Since Alonso’s Cuban asylum status doesn’t count, Seattle will carry 6 foreigners to RFK: Leo Gonzalez, Sebastien LeToux, Freddie Ljungberg, Fredy Montero, Sanna Nyassi, and Steve Zakuani. One of those players will not be participating in today’s match.

The winning team will earn $100,000 (which has been historically divided by the captain) and a strong possibility of an automatic entry into the CONCACAF Champions’ League.

Arkadiusz Prus will be the referree in the center. He has officiated Seattle’s 2-0 loss at Chivas USA (4 yellows), Seattle’s 3-0 win over Colorado (5 yellows), and the Sounders’ 1-1 draw with Houston (2 yellows). Prus was also in the middle of DC’s 2-0 loss to Toronto FC where he issued 6 yellows.

Kickoff is slated for 430p. It will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel (FSC can be found on Comcast ch. 401). Max Bretos & Christopher Sullivan will be calling the game.

Check out our list of confirmed places airing the match.

Sounder fans can go to DC United blog at http://dcunitedblog.blogspot.com/ and post a comment. They are filling the stands with “astroturfers”. They claim it’s a small insignificant mid week tournament that really doesn’t matter since they have so many in the display case.

Tell what the MLS could have gained with the match in Qwest.

    GO SOUNDERS!!!

I’ve read comments elsewhere questioning the tournaments’ importance, but I know this: right now there are 13 other MLS teams and a whole host of USL and lower division teams who would love to be playing for a title tonight. And in the end, DC is going to count it in their case regardless of the significance. Except they won’t be b/c we’re gonna take it!

Thank God, the preview is up! After this morning there is no longer a key reading “F5″ on my keyboard! Your live blogs are great, b.t.w.

    My thoughts:
    1) Our defense is obviously concerning. We’ll need to come out of our shell offensively to try and offset the shortcomings in the back.
    2) I want into the Champions League more than I want my next breath.
    3) I now know to set my tv to ‘mute’ thanks to the match commentating info you provided.

    Thanks guys!

    RE: The Defense…

You know things are worrisome when you’re concerned that Taylor Graham isn’t available.

The international player rule is stupid. I guess Nyassi doesn’t get to dress for this one.

It would suck if Sanna was kept out of the squad given the tournament he’s had. If memory serves, he scored against RSL, played exceptionally well against cRapids and, of course, assisted Roger on the first goal in Portland (one of the top three moments of the season so far for me).

Also, we have worked much harder to get to this final than DC had do. Dammit, I hope we get it done.

So if not Sanna, then who?  One of our guys, either Gonzalez, Ljungberg, Le Toux, Zakuani, Montero, or Nyassi can’t be on the roster.

    Joe Reply:

I wish I had the answer to that. I guess that’s why Sigi makes the big bucks.

Leo hasn’t been w/ us on this run, but we need him badly to help out in defense. Otherwise I’d say him.

FL hasn’t featured in the tournament either, but he’s out for our next league match and is a game-changer. No doubt we need him.

Seba has the work-rate and the USOC reputation.

And Fredy, you just don’t sit someone who’s scored 10 goals for you.

    Mike Reply:

I’m sorry. But there is no doubt in my mind; Sorry Sanna.

To compound on my eariler comment about the roads both clubs have taken – our attendance numbers destroy theirs for the USOC matches.
The stadium the played in officially seats 3,200, but looking at it you could get at least a thousand more with temporary stands, standing room, whatever else. Their attendance numbers are:
    2,021
    2,134
    2,457

The complex appears to be about 45 mins. outside DC as well…comparable to Starfire/Seattle.

I agree.  Sanna is the expendable one for this game, no doubt about it.  Gonzalez has been great.  And we are lacking in eligible defenders for this game as it is.  I am crossing my fingers for F10 playing in a forward position.  The way he is able to explode with energy and get past defenders is great.  And his willingness to take shots from distance is also nice.
