the draw might be ok

Fredy Montero against Chivas USA (Jack Hunter- publicola.net)

let’s be sure, a win would have been massive. a six point swing over one of our closest in the table, even if they have the games in hand would have been a giant leap towards the playoffs.  however, keeping the distance equal behind us isn’t the end of the world. of course we would have preferred to put a bit of distance between us, but the alternative, them taking the 3 from us, would have been a lot worse.

having said all that diplomatic crap, boy that was frustrating. the game can be summarized in just two sentences

chivas came to defend. we hit the keeper 4 times.

fundamentally, i suppose there isn’t anything wrong with a team going to get a draw on the road. it makes sense. win your games at home and get draws on the road has been a mantra of most teams over the years. but there is a difference in aiming for at least a draw,  vs doing everything you can to bring the game to a standstill by playing only defense. chivas were in this for a nil nil draw from the beginning. they are a decent team, but if they can only muster 3 shots, and one on goal ( a 30 yard feeble effort), well you know that they didn’t come out to attack.

ok, so that is what they did, and we have to live with it. but as mike mentioned in the earlier post, we are now 585 minutes from a home goal. what is the problem? you have to ask our team, even if all the teams want to do is defend, how can we not score?

thornton today was annoyingly good. and without taking away from his great saves, i really don’t think that it was him so much making great athletic saves as it was him jumping to where he thought we were shooting, and he was right.

are we that predictable? i dont think so. i really think we do that all over again with those same chances, and we get at least 3 goals.

well i don’t want to beat that horse too much. results from this weekend haven’t been too shabby so far. houston and LA both winning could be viewed as a bad thing but you know what, it could also be seen as a good thing. at this point in time, we might LA and Houston to run away with our division but winning against our other rivals on the way. it was tough to see them win today, but we also got to see toronto and RSL lose today, which isn’t bad at all. those results are still a massive help to us with regards to the last few spots for the playoffs. that, and colorado drawing last night is quite a silver lining to our result.

any way you want to slice it however, there are a massive amount of points to be dropped by ALL   of our possible competitors into the playoffs. honestly, if we can just make the effort to win a few of our own games… it will take care of itself.

ok, i am tired and this is pretty much the most boring post i have ever written. i guess i was inspired by our first half today.

oh, but before i forget, the informant is a good movie and the huskies won the national championship today, so good for them.

Your less intoxicated posts do tend to be more diplomatic. It’s like the medium-well version of you when all we want is bloody and rare.

is it a problem for me that my more intoxicated posts get the best  reactions.

but yes, i will admit this fell into the “i have been up since 5am and I feel obligated to post before i go to bed” category.

i will try harder next time.

we’re dropping too many home points. no matter how you look at it, it’s not a good thing.

OK, how’s this for at least a sliver of of optimism? (sorry a sliver is all I’m good for now) Do or die against Fcd and a 90+ minute goal that deflects off of a defender, the post, the keepers heel and while spinning furiously, the ball slowly, agonizingly runs parallel at first, then because of the spinning momentum crosses the line an instant before the keeper can get it!

Though I think he’s an incredible player, I was far more impressed with Montero this home match.  He was working harder than in previous weeks.  Did he mature all of a sudden?  Am I alone here?

  • Artesian

No, the past few he’s pretty much just played and kept his mouth shut. Good to see. Now if FL can do the same…

    LJ Reply:

Yeah, but even beyond talking… Montero has been standing it up and hustling far more.  As for the talking, it seems to me that Ljungberg has been much better too.

  • sammy

Montero needs to get away from the goalie when he has it in his hands and run back to get onside.

The Ref had a nice little talking to him, Montero was very close to picking up another meaningless card for his behavior.

I feel like Sigi has done something behind the scenes to get our boys in line.  Montero has been working harder, Ljundberg has kept his mouth shut for the most part, and Jaqua hasn’t started the last 2 games.  I sense a crackdown on the BS.

A potentially huge home field advantage in Qwest Field is being pissed away.  Is there any MLS team that draws as large of a crowd as often?

    Joe Reply:

No other MLS team comes close. Most of them couldn’t if they wanted to. What’s being discussed now though is the fact that opposing teams are getting up for playing in Seattle, whereas it’s the norm for our players to play here now.

We have a target on our backs when we play at home b/c of our crowd and atmosphere. It’s kindof like being ranked #1 in college football…everyone will be gunning for you every week. I think that’s what’s happening when we play at home. At least for opposing net-minders.

  • carella211

well, since the opposing teams are getting up to play us because of our totally awesome crowd, we should give EVERYONE in the crowd free nachos (damn northenders don’t share!)!!!! that way, all the players, or anyone in the stadium will hear, is 30,000+ fans munching down on some tasty tortilla chips instead of the singing and chanting. and while the opposing players are looking around and listening to the loud cracks from all the snacking on the free nachos, our guys can sneak on by them and actually score some home goals!!!!!! yea me for this brilliant idea!! and remember, i’m in section 120 for the FCD match, and i like extra cheese and onions!

  • Derek R

Haha that sounds like a great idea.

We *cruch* are the *crunch* blue! *crunch*

I wonder if the Sounders staff practice shooting low against BIG goalies? I bet they don’t.
