does the higher seed have the advantage?

ask around the forums and blogospheres and while most might think that hosting the second game in a two legged aggregate score situation is the bigger advantage… (you get to take care of the end of the game on your home field) there are some that think hosting the first game is the better deal. while i can see the case for both, if you forced an answer out of me, i think i would take the first game at home.

unlike in europe, there is no advantage given to away goals (i.e. they are the difference maker if tied after 180 minutes) so that changes the strategy quite a bit in my opinion.

the sounders will basically want nothing more than leave game 1 with the highest net goal advantage and then go to houston with a more defensive minded  strategy. yeah yeah, i know  “score a lot of goals at home” is pretty much stating the obvious but you know what i mean.

so let’s say it all goes to plan. let’s say we can get out of seattle with a +1 or even a +2 goal difference… don’t you think seattle then has a distance advantage? sure houston is at home for the second leg, but they are on the back foot regardless of where they are playing. they have to come out and score goals…and because of that, the game is more open giving us a greater chance to score goals. it is no secret that we like to score against the run of play.

it theoretically gives us the first shot at running our game plan and if it doesn’t go well, then we have a chance at plan B in houston. we have the better shot at being in the drivers seat than houston, and i would take that every time.

think about it in reverse… would you rather go to houston with a +1 goal differencial? or them come here with a + 1 goal differencial? it is a tough question, but i really think you have to take the +1 goal… especially since we have proven our ability to win on the road.  all of this obviously presumes that we win at home…. but there is no other way to think about it.

oh, and then this is this other disadvantage for houston… they are staying in LA tonight, and then have to fly here on tuesday. while that is better than flying back to houston, and then up to seattle, it still has to suck living out of a hotel for that long,  and i am sure it will drum up plenty of memories of their previous travels to seattle with short turn arounds..

7/4 at KC                              W
7/7 at Charleston             W
7/11 at Seattle                    L
7/18 at Toronto                 T
7/21 at Seattle                    L

this isn’t the exact same situation… but right now houston is on the following schedule

10/18 LA                               T
10/21 at isidro metepan L
10/25 at chivas                  W
10/29 at seattle                   ?

i am willing to bet that most, if not all of the dynamo, would much rather be playing in houston this weekend than in seattle on thursday.

let’s hope that this plays out as well for us this time as it did back in july.

i am sure there are a lot of thoughts, agreeing and disagreeing… what do you think?

The only advantage that I think we have playing the first game at home is that it forces Houston to play like 4 games in 12 days.
Other than that 2nd leg at home is any day more advantageous especially given the kind of crowd Seattle has.

Remember how Anfield crowd plays when CL games are played there. Liverpool has distinct advantage with the kind of support they get during the second leg at home when the target is more clearer.

With the kind of away form Sounders are in, I don’t see a distinct disadvantage playing away the second leg. But to me playing the first leg at home has no advantage, per se, whats-so-ever.

    Go Sounders Go,

    Fight Sounders Fight,
And the entire world will tremble at your might,
    We sing for you,
    We love you so,
And we will follow you wherever you may go…

From watching previous MLS playoff games, the advantage of the top seed in the first round is that both teams tend to play the first leg VERY conservatively, making these very low-scoring games.  This gives the homefield advantage to the upper-seed team in the second leg — the leg that really, really matters.

If Seattle can go up by three goals or so in the first, leg?  No upper-seed advantage whatsoever.

i guess that is my point… rightly or wrongly, i expect us to take care of our business at home… and if we do that, i would rather host the first game.

oh well, it is what it is.

On a related topic:  Who do we talk to to get the away goal rule implemented?  In general (not talking about SEATTLE, of course), these first legs will put 98% of your body parts to sleep.

I don’t worry about going on the road b/c there’s not one team in the rest of this league capable of producing a crowd/atmosphere that will shake our boys. I’ve watched enough matches in Europe and South America to see what it takes to rattle a team and our country simply doesn’t have it. I’d be more worried about an abnormally warm night or something else condition-related.

Jaqua and Brad Evans are both up for goal of the week.  I’m voting for Brad because I felt like it was a much more impressive goal (by the scorer) than Jaqua’s.  Both involved great passing though.  Brad hasn’t one goal-of-the-week yet this season either, so that’s two reasons to vote for Brad.  Go vote!

Maybe I haven’t read it, but shouldn’t this analysis mention that if the higher seed were to host the first match a tie (likely to happen) would be hosted in the lower seed’s stadium?

    yamsmos Reply:

not sure i understand your question dave…

to my knowledge… there is no chance of the higher seed ever hosting the first match… at least according to this http://web.mlsnet.com/about/league.jsp?section=regulations&content=playoffs

which states “The lower seeded team in the Conference Semifinal hosts the first game. The winners of those four series advance to single-game Conference Championships that will determine the MLS Cup Finalists. “

    Dave Clark Reply:

It was a point of clarification, that yes the higher seed certainly has the advantage.  Ties matter and happen regardless of the first matches score.

The higher seed gets to host the Extra Time.  That’s a big deal.

    yamsmos Reply:

well we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

i don’t see any clear advantage of who hosts first and second… and with our ability to play on the road.. i see us with a goal advantage here, and the nerve to handle it on the road…

just for S&G’s, let’s look at the playoff records of the higher seeds vs the lower seeds since we went to just two divisions.

it does end up slightly in favor of the higher seed. but statistician i am not… is this an advantage of the seeding, or merely just b/c the higher seed is, by definition, the better team?

over the last 7 years, the record is
    higher seed 16 wins
    lower seed 12 wins.

    Higher Seed/Lower Seed Record
    2008 – 2-2
    2007 – 2-2
    2006 3-1
    2005 1-3
    2004 3-1
    2003 4-0
    2002 1-3

with houstons travel, our recent form… it is still sounders all the way for me.

Houston looks like a tired team, Chivas outplayed them but lost. The early Thursday game won’t help them, but the long break for the return match will help them. If Seattle presses high as they did against Dallas they should get a good result.

  • ciscokid

In this circumstance, the 1st game favors Seattle, BUT what if we don’t take care of business at home? What if we go down to Houston -1? The flip side of the first game is that you really have to try to “win” against a team that couldn’t be less interested in winning.

That’s why, like the poster above, I generally dislike going to the first game of a 2-game series. There’s very little to win and everything to lose, and a winner is not decided. I’m paying $150 (4 tix) to essentially watch a game until halftime then told to go home and watch the 2nd half on TV a weel later.

As a fan, I’d rather host the 2nd game every time.

The orange will be out in force.  Its no quest field but we have sold out every playoff game in our history.

    Mark Reply:

It will be good to have strong fan support from both the teams.  I always get frustrated when I watch an away match with empty stands in the background.  Are any of you “Orange Men” planning on coming to Seattle?

    Lysander Reply:

Same here.  The KC game was especially hard to watch because of the lack of people in the stadium (and lack of seats at the end zones).
