Pat Onstad is a Douchebag

Pat Onstad on his yellow card…

“To be honest I just gave him a super light bump and he went down like he normally does. He rolled around a few times. If it would have been Nate Jaqua, he would have brushed his shoulder like a fly was buzzing him. That is Fredy, and as soon as I bumped him I told myself that was the wrong guy to bump. I got what I deserved and the referee thought he embellished it a little bit.”

First, watch Onstad push Fredy Montero in the back on the preceding play- Ljungberg’s Corner Kick at the 1:35 mark.

Then, skip to the 2:00 mark… Yep Mr Ostad- “a super light bump” where you can clearly see a coil in your legs, leading to a slight lunge, and lowering of your right shoulder. Maybe you watched to much hockey growing up in Canada.

Again, there’s no way a ref if giving a red card to a goalkeeper in the playoffs for that.  Especially on national TV.

    Mike Reply:

Being on National TV should have ZERO impact on his decisions. ZERO.

  • ole4

Sorry. Freddy played a part in this, too. And his acting sucked. The refs were inconsistent throughout.

    Mike Reply:

OK, you’re from Houston. After watching the replay you really think that specific incident with Onstad by Montero was a flop?

    That. specific. incident?
As Grant Wahl said, Montero’s reputation hurt the team there.

    yamsmos Reply:

So it is ok for onstad to ram his shoulder into another player, if that player then ends up going down easier than you think he should.

got it. so yeah this was freddy’s fault too.

  • rv

Agreed. His calls, or lack thereof, all night were extremely frustrating. I saw more than a few simple calls (which team gets the throw-in, corner kick vs goal kicks) that were completely wrong. A red card on national television would be a lot less irritating than 90-minutes of terrible officiating.

  • Brian

I knew there was a good reason I didn’t like Ostad. I thought it was just the hair. . . .

Let’s be real: Montero’s kind of a flopper.  I love his creativity, but really only 1 or 2 out of every five are actually fouls. That shove in front of the goal was no acting, though. Just a blatant attack, for no apparent reason.  Should have been sent off, no doubt in my mind.

    yamsmos Reply:

this is the problem with going down easy. and yes, i agree that freddy, on occasion does.  last week, when he was sort of kicked in the back, fredy rolled around as if shot in the face by a sniper. the thing is, the kick was already a foul, he doesn’t have to do that.

most of my frustrations with freddy over this season have been about his lack of maturity and his decision making in certain parts of the pitch. he will need to learn from this and i hope a few of his teammates are talking to him about his antics…

onstads shoulder punch would have knocked down most people, and most people would have gone down, that is for sure.

this is the long way of saying… yes, his reputation hurt him in this instance.

  • Jeff

Montero will score on Onstad on Nov. 8th. Jaqua too. Anyone think this game will be reviewed by MLS and some kind of actions will be taken regarding Onstad?

  • jt

Hmm – I need a creative tw0-pole for the Houston game now.  MLS is trying to clean things up in the game, per the ussoccer.com referee sites.  They need to red card him for his actions, and the discipline committee has that ability.

  • Ben R

I am wondering if Onstad will be getting fined for this.  I doubt he will get a suspension from any review, but the MLS needs to make it clear that this type of behavior is not allowed.

  • jt

Anyone wanting to take this back to Houston, Frontier has tickets connecting in DEN for $238, go down Saturday and return Sunday @ 715p.

  • Some Dynamo Fan

Onstad, or any keeper, will not get sent off in a playoff game in the MLS for that bump. Period. Freddy the flopper has too much history for the referee not to card him for flopping. The center consulted with the AR’s and they both agreed.

It was an awesome game with many opportunities by both teams, great saves, and a pace rarely seen in the MLS. I love the atmosphere at Qwest and I cannot wait for the home leg. Robertson will be rocking, I just hope the field is in shape. U of H plays out of town next week so let’s hope so. Speaking of fields, turf sucks and should not be allowed in the MLS. Way too many balls skidded out of reach.

    Gary B. Reply:

It had been raining.  Balls skid out of reach on wet grass too.  The turf in Seattle plays just fine.  From the sound of it, it probably played better than the field at Robertson will after the football match.  And football lines too I would imagine.

But the point that you’re missing is that Montero now has a yellow because he was basically assaulted by Onstad.  He wouldn’t have been down on the ground at all if not for Onstad’s actions.

  • DaveS

I agree… If Montero didn’t have a reputation as a whiny, flopping, opportunistic douchebag, we may have gotten that call.  For example, if Onstad had done that to Zakuani or Jaqua he would have been tossed I think.

  • bremer tonian (gap for the sub)

um a wet field dumbass dynamo fan, maybe your team should practice passing the ball more

  • Trayton

The most telling evidence of Onstad’s shoulder bump is the fact that he took two steps after the initial contact and was essentially standing over Montero as he landed.

    beowuff Reply:

Not to mention that he took a  couple of steps before initiating contact. That was much more then a “light bump”. A light bump would be given from a stand still. The look on his face is one of anger and he’s obviously moving forward to put his body weight behind the “bump”.

That said, Montero should really dive less… He needs to take a look at Jaqua, taking a blow to the head and bouncing back up to keep playing… Only to be told by another play to sit back down because he’s bleeding…

  • TL

Think about this.  Yellow card for Freddy for flopping and a yellow for Onstad for what?  If Freddy flopped, then why is the ref giving Onstad a yellow and not just Freddy.  Who cares if he flopped a little.  What matters is the action that Onstad did.  How many times have we seen a player get a small elbow and play it up.  The guy giving the elbow gets the red.  You can’t penalize the victom because he didn’t act tough enough.  It really shows the indecision of the ref.  Give them both yellows? He never really got control of the Dynamoe’s chippy behavior and the Dynamoe being a veteran MLS team, took full advantage of that, instead of playing the game the right way.  Real bush league team.  We need to knock them out in Houston, in a big embarrassing way!

    Mike Reply:

    These are very good points.

  • Joe

It’s clear Onstad is racist…and ‘douchebag’ is putting it lightly, dontcha think?

    Mike Reply:

I like to understate for effect.

  • Steve

I think he gave Montero the yellow so he wouldn’t have to give Onstad the red.  He knew it was a hard shove, but with Montero’s acting, he thought it was the best way to not alter the game/series too much.

  • DaveS

Someone on Seattle Times comments points this out.  Watch Onstad/Montero at 1:35 of this video (this is before the big incident).

    Ben R Reply:

If the referee isn’t going to call that earlier in the game I think I can sympathize with Montero for embellishing the shoulder charge that happened later.  Ephing MLS refs…

  • Ben R

Nice find DaveS.  That is pretty jacked up at 1:38 as the kick is being taken.  Riley’s gotten a red for lighter contact than that…

Any chance we can petition to get Onstad’s tarp removed from Qwest for being an a-hole and replaced with someone we like?

  • http://gosounders.com Mike

I totally forgot about that. Onstad = Even Bigger Douchebag.

  • yamsmos

    this makes me happy.

next question is, can we lock down patonstadisadouchebag.com?

  • David

For all those complaining about Montero flopping, if it was Blanco (who flops more) do you really think he would have gotten a yellow, or do you think he wouldn’t be booked and Onstad given a red?

I’m also curious why the toe to the head of Jaqua wasn’t a cardable offense for dangerous play?

  • Some Dynamo Fan

I think we can all argre that Blanco is the biggest flopper ever to flop. I’m glad he is going home.  That being said, he is capable of some of the most beautiful passes. It’s just his attitude that I can’t stand. Much like Mr. Freddy.

  • LJ

Onstad should have been ejected!  I thought it was a red when I saw it last night… and I still think so after watching it several times at home.   He goes after Montero with a purpose.  Onstad even touches his face out of the blue like he’s been hit.  If you want to talk about embellishing, there you go!

  • clutj

Clark’s foot was already up there when Jaqua went in with his head, and it was only borderline high to begin with.  When the head is moving into the foot as much or more than the foot is moving, that’s an accident and not dangerous play.  Jaqua knew that and huge kudos to him for not being a whiner after the game.  He’s a stud.   So is Kasey Keller for having no problem with the way the game was reffed.   Freddy, on the other hand, is a flopper.

    Ben R Reply:

It’s dangerous play, just not yellow card worthy.  An indirect kick is all that was merited.

  • kp

The more I see/read about Onstad the more I hope we score a crap load of goals on him at him.  He is the definition of douche bag (or as I use at the games to keep it PG doh-che )

  • LJ

MLS needs to step up and review this call.  They can’t let crap like that just slide through… Onstad should be charged a fine and serve at least a game suspension.

  • Artesian

Uh, Gynamo fans, Keller wouldn’t dare say anything. MLS would fine and maybe more if he did. You actually think he *really* believes Salazar and Co. didn’t just perpetrate a crime against football? I guarantee he’s as pissed as most of the rest of us. So is Sigi.

  • Steve

Having finally just watched this again….that wasn’t a “light” bump or if it was, I would what a hard bump is to him?  Sending him back 20 yards, concussion?

  • Gary B.

I just watched it and I’m sorry but I actually didn’t see any embellishment on Montero’s part.  Onstad is just an asshat, plain and simple.

  • rv

Having been blocked by company firewall all day and unable to view replays, I finally watched it because I didn’t get a good view from my seats last night.. and WOW fuck this guy. Should’ve been a straight red and the yellow on Montero was absolutely unwarranted.

  • Coug1990

Wow.  I never noticed the 2-handed shove that he gives to the back of  Montero right before the shoulder he give to him.  I hope the Sounders blew that up and sent it into the league.

Regarding embellishment by Montero on the play, Onstad is 6’2″ 215lbs and Montero is 5-9 160.   Someone that big puts a shoulder into someone that small and he is going down.

Onstad and Houston all night were trying to get into the heads of Seattle and it didn’t work.

  • http://seattle.theoffside.com laurie

I thought it was interesting that right after the first shove on Montero, Mullan had to clear Ianni’s header off the line because Pat wasn’t in a position to do it.

Who’s getting into whose heads?  :-D

  • http://oi-seattle.blogspot.com Gary

All texans are douchebags.  It’s just who they are.

  • Artesian

All Chicagoans are douchebags. It’s just who they are.

    How you like that Gary?

  • Coug1990

Taylor Twellman of NE was interviewed after the NE-CHI match and when they showed the replay of the Onstad-Montero incident, Twellman said that Onstad should have been red carded.

It is not just people from Seattle that thought Onstad was a punk.
