is disgrace the best word?

freddie is a little pissed. you can read about his pissed-offed-ness… here.

now i am going to try to be a little diplomatic here b/c we all have to recognize that, the mls is nowhere near the level of support found in most outher countries around the world. and, as a result, american football lines are inevitable on the pitch in some cases. i am not saying it is ok, or we should accept it, but at least we can all understand that it is going to happen.

so.. is a “disgrace” a good word?

actually, i think it may be. given that this is an MLS playoff match, how the heck can the stadium not work around this? I have looked, but i can’t tell if there was a ‘throwball’ game in the same stadium on friday… or  today. anyone know? if there was, then why not have the playoff game on thursday so you could play on a soccer pitch? it seems that the options were there, and houston punted… literally. they decided to play on american football lines and it is a bigger priority than the day they play on.

do i have all the facts? heh… probably not, when do i ever?… but should we be pissed… sure!!!! why? b/c we are fans… and watching an mls playoff game on throwball field is disgracful.

when the MLS….. ahem, if the MLS ever gets the credit it deserves in the US as a legitamate league, it will be a beautiful day.

UPDATE:950a Don Ruiz is happy to report that the football lines have disappeared overnight.

Univ. of Houston was on the road tonight, which means we’re likely taking a back seat to some Friday night HS football lines. Great. Of course, in Texas there are only two sports: football and spring football. Sounds like they’ll at least paint over the lines in green, which will put the field somewhere in the bearable to semi-respectable range. Yellow soccer lines though? I guess we’ll see.

But the larger issue that you and Freddie point to is the utter bullsh*t an MLS fan must endure. Houston, NYRB and NE all deal with football lines and we’ve even seen them in Columbus (a SSS). Things won’t change until players and fans say enough. You took the right stance. Diplomacy be damned.

  • Help in Vegas

My wife and I are in Vegas for the weekend….every bar and sportsbook will be showing only NFL games.  Is there a way to watch the game online (live, realtime)?

You can always ask them to change one of the TV’s to the soccer game. If they have a bunch of TV’s they should be willing to do so… Even if you don’t get sound, at least you’ll be able to watch the game… I’d go to a couple of places and ask beforehand to see.

give these guys a call http://www.crownandanchorlv.com/

They are dedicated to english soccer, but if they have nothing playing, and they have the channel (fsn i believe) they may put it on for you. been here for an FA cup final a way back while on a bachelor party… about a $10 cab ride from the strip if i remember correctly.

other than that, you can buy a day ticket for $5 on http://web.mlsnet.com/products/

    good luck

I will forever now call “American Football” “throwball”. I think that is the perfect name. I’ve already gotten into the habit of thinking of soccer whenever anyone says football. It’s time to take back the name!

Also, considering the reffing, wouldn’t the lines be, to use another sports terminology, par for the course of the MLS playoffs? Maybe upper management MLS doesn’t want us to win our first year, so they’re throwing everything they can think of to stop us? Bad refs, lines, etc?

I could see the football lines and the football logos.  I could also see more sand than grass.

Ironically, the first thing Kinnear whines about when he plays Seattle at home is the fieldturf, but you can’t even begin to try and convince me what they played on today was better.

I also liked seeing all the rave green in the crowd after seeing practically no orange for our home match.

That was a cow pasture today.  It looked way worse in person.  It was no different than the grass outside the stadium where people were tailgating.

    Lame.
