Montero to Europe?

Fredy MonteroThe rumors have been floating since before he even dressed in the Rave Green kit- that Fredy Montero would head to Europe. And those rumors are back again.

Jose Romero has uncovered a story from a Colombian TV station that a transfer from the Emerald City to Europe is in the plans for the Colombian Striker.

No specific team or country is noted; though Montero would play for clubs in England, the Netherlands, Italy, or Spain.

Montero played in 27 games during the 2009 Campaign. He scored 12 goals for Sounders FC and added 7 assists.

What do you think? Will Montero be in Rave Green when the season starts in March?

I don’t think he’s ready yet.  I really think there is a big benefit for him to get regular playing time at the MLS level for one more season.  But on the other hand, depending on how this CBA thing goes the extra cash for selling him might be nice.

  • Brian

I just said on Jose’s blog that I don’t think he’s ready, but if I’m wrong, I hope he makes a lot of money.

I don’t think Montero could start in those leagues, but could be a sub.  Hopefully anything decided would be limited to an off season loan, but then again, we’ve never known the details on how his rights are setup.

Meh… if there were anything to this we wouldn’t be hearing it second hand from an obscure Colombian website.  It sounds like Montero is just reiterating that he would like to move ASAP, but we know that.

    The sooner the better

not a freaking chance. not only b/c he isn’t ready, but there is no substance to the story. per jose, montero said he would love to play in spain… well no shit. so would i. there isn’t anything there.

now that i have said that, he will now probably be signed within the week he he

Regarding the story, I agree, there is no substance to it. Regading if Montero is ready or not, I only know that the longer he stays in MLS the less ready he will become.

  • bellingham

He has always stated his ‘dream’ of playing in Europe and I bet 98% of the MLS players would like to play in the EPL or Spain but it doesn’t mean it happens.  He was like a school boy playing agains Barca this past summer.  Watch the film and I am sure the scouts in Europe have also…he is not ready and to raw at times.

  • Anthony

He should be loaned to England. He’s definitely not ready for the Premiership, but I think he can get valuable experience in the lower English leagues like the Football League Championship and League 1 and 2. He has great talent, but it could really be expanded on. In England  he can really learn. Loan him off to a team where he will start everyday and when he comes back he’ll probably have matured more.

  • Stanwood

I’d be well beyond surprised if any of the major top flight leagues in Europe took Montero.  He’s a competent striker at the MLS level, but is far from showing anything approaching the capability necessary to compete at those levels.  At a minimum, he needs to be able to tolerate physical play in addition to creating goal-scoring opportunities (for himself or others) while under pressure from a defender.  As it is now, he’s only dangerous when unmarked and even that is a low percentage performance.

European agents and managers will not have to witness more than a single game of his before they see these weaknesses in his game.  It seems to me that most of this speculation is prideful/wishful thinking based on an emotional attachment wanting the best for “our” boy.
