USSF decision and what it means to the Sounders

The USSF has effectively told that USL and NASL have been given a week to get their act together.

What does this mean to the Sounder if the USL/NASL teams can’t get their acts together?  First, and foremost, the US Open Cup will be a much different game this upcoming year.  Likely options are to either seed all MLS teams directly in, or a single game play in, rather than the 2 games last year.  It would also prevent a Sounders / Timbers match in 2010, forcing Kasey Keller to resign for at least 1 more year (not a bad side effect).

It is very interesting to see the fallout of the sale of the USL to NuRock Holding (Nike inherited the USL as part of it’s purchase of Umbro back in 2007).  The problem is that with the way the sale went down, you have a lot (10) of pissed off owners (TOA/ NASL) and a league of 3 team for the USL (Portland, Austin and Puerto Rico).

If the USL/NASL bit can be resolved in a week, I have hope the MLS CBA can be done by the 30th.  I don’t want them to be tied together, but I fear where one goes, so will follow the other.

It is possible to have a 3 team league.  The old PCHL started off with only 3 teams, and was up to 5 teams before the league folded 15 years later.

Actually I don’t care what happens with USL and NASL.  I just want the MLS to start promotion and relegation in some way.

That’s what they should do but they won’t do it because relegation is unamerican. But you’re being selfish by not caring about non-MLS teams. It wasn’t that long ago we were watching our Sounders duke it out with clubs in places like Rochester, Carolina, Puerto Rico, many of which didn’t have much pro sport at all aside from maybe a minor league baseball team.

Having the lower divisions is good for soccer in this country, fans and players, and therefore good for MLS.

I’m not selfish, I’m just a home town fan.  I only root for teams from Seattle and since there are no teams from Seattle in USL or NASL then I don’t watch them.  I will watch NHL and EPL because they are the best leagues in their sport, but since Seattle doesn’t have a team in either league (stupid sonics) I don’t have a favorite team in those leagues.

I dunno I was reading another page and basically they brought up the thought that with the NASL forming there weren’t the same restrictions as USL or MLS- no DP Slots, no salary caps; which would make it attractive for ambitious owners to see a large backer.  In the case they used they brough up an owner like Mark Cuban who would be free to bring in as many big names as possible.  At first I thought – so what, he would clean house on all the other NASL teams and no one would care?

Upon further examination an owner like this would hype the hell out of the Open Cup, and most likely win it.  Then he could potentially put a big spin on the win and claim that NASL is a stronger league than the MLS.

So it puts US soccer in a very sticky situation and unfortunately it seems they wanna keep their head in the sand.

Sorry Mike, but Andrea Canales needs to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and you need to stop reading anything she writes.  Seriously, I mean ANYTHING she writes.  She’s like a female Jamie Trecker without any soccer sense.  No big money owner is going to put down mega bucks on a 2nd division team just to try and win the USOC.  Also, they wouldn’t attract any DP caliber players, so not having a limit on DPs wouldn’t help.  The money isn’t there (and isn’t coming) and the infrastructure isn’t there.

NuRock needs to do the right thing and sell USL. The majority of the teams/owners don’t want to be involved with them and the lawsuits they have brought prove they don’t have what it takes to run an organization like USL.
