Seattle in USA 2018/2022 Bid

Posted by Mike on January 12, 2010 · Under International, Qwest Field · View Comments

gousabidToday, the committee supporting the US’s opportunity to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup submitted their list of 18 cities as a part of their final bid in the selection process.

Seattle was selected as one of the 18 cities following a 9-month selection process.

not that this is a surprise, but it is sure nice to finally confirm it.

while i doubt we would get the final (well maybe, who knows) it would be great to get a few quarterfinals or even semi.

chicago got no love… he he. was it chicago that had more honduran fans than US fans last year? if so, serves them right.

Of what I understand, Qwest Field is too small to host a final.  The final stadium must accomidate over 100,000 fans, so that’s LA or Dallas. (currently they don’t have 100,000 seats, but both stadiums have room to add more seats)

It would really suck if we get North Korea vs Palaou at Qwest Field.

Maybe now Portland will stop trying to call themselves a soccer town…Its hard to be Soccer Town USA when you aren’t even considered to host the World Cup.  Oh well, I guess they still have meth.

Husky stadium was also selected as a pitch. And it holds more people then Qwest field… I wonder which would be better to see a game at?

  • Brian

In the past I have heard several people from portland complain that they don’t have an NFL team.  Then I ask them where is their 60,000 seat stadium?  Eugene?  Only about an hour to hour and a half drive out of the city.  Keep smoking that meth.

There is two things to consider about Husky stadium.  First is there stupid 120 year old prohobition law that says no Alcohol is allowed to be sold on any college campus in Washington state.

Second is will the husky stadium remodel be done before the world cup?  Right now even though it’s 70,000 seat stadium, there are many poor view seats that will be improved after the remodel and the track is removed.  Also I believe they want to add another 30,000 seats which would make it eligible for a DRY final round game.  They just need the money for the remodel.
