the three friendlies we are going to get

Posted by yamsmos on January 27, 2010 · Under Commentary · View Comments

just wanted to let you in on the three friendlies we will be getting with our season tickets.

1. obligatory EPL team…. hmm, i am thinking top ten team, but not quite top 4… which leaves  me with liverpool…. ooooooh ouch. sorry….. too soon? actually, i expect to see a team with “manchester” in there name on this one.

2. assumed south (or central) american team…. ok, i’ll bite. everyone says club america. but no, too obvious and lame. boca or river? you’re having a laugh. gots to go with independiete on this one. why? if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. uh… or i have no good reason.

dark horse is deportivo cali.

3. bonus “who could it possibly be” team. well, with the world cup, there aren’t too many well known club teams who could cash in on a preseason in America due to the short preseason. So likely we should expect a team with little or no players in the WC. boy this screams rangers or celtic, but i am going to have to go with leyton orient or scunthorpe united.

you heard it here first.

  • MIKE

People are going to be pissed. The front office spoiled the fans in Year1.

  • laurie

Dude, you are on a blogging roll today.

P.S.  Can I really embed videos in comments now?  Let’s test this, shall we?

  • FO’d

Club America isn’t technically South America, but your heart’s in the right place. I can’t stand those Argentine teams but some of the Brasilian teams do like to travel, especially for the right price. Flamengo, Sao Paulo, Corinthians? Any other teams that might test my allegiance? =-O

  • greta

i would piss myself with joy if we got liverpool.

but yeah, too fuckin soon for a joke like that.

  • greta

ahahaha also leyton or scunthorpe. sheff wed would be nice, as would derby.

    or NEWCASTLE.

or brighton & hove. or hmmm. i like crystal palace.

i think people will be sort of disappointed after last season’s friendlies.

  • wagonmasterjoe

Any chance it could be a Bundesliga squad?

  • bud

Who needs fucking friendlies in the middle of the season?  Those killed our momemtum last year. (Remember the goalless stretch mid-summer?  Came right after the friendlies.)

Take the regular season, add in US Open Cup fixtures, plus the Champions League, and you’ve got a too-full, choked up schedule already.  English teams right now are facing the same problems, and that’s not counting some insane friendly against a team that would light up the Sounders 9 of ten games.

Maybe the Irish have some free time this summer.  That would make this all a bit more palpable.

  • bud

Also, the full season schedule should be coming out any day now.  Been waiting to plan vacations.

  • yamsmos

AHHHH ha ha aha ha ha. oh sweet geography… you have failed me yet again. ok updated post so less people can laugh at me, until they read the comments that is ;)

  • yamsmos

sorry. it just kind of came out.

  • yamsmos

my gut feeling is that the schedule is done and they are waiting for the junior basketball league talks to be completed.

  • yamsmos

as good a chance as any i would expect, but there are only a couple that fall into the “let’s travel 5,000 miles for a preseason friendly in order to self promote our brand” bucket.

  • MIKE

He said SOUTH of AMERICA…  :-P

  • Willmore

I’m hoping for Flamengo as the S. American team and Liverpool as the EPL team.

    Why?

    I won’t tell.

  • Ben R

Seeing Liverpool would make me so happy, but I am doubtuful.  Personally I would really like to try to get Bayern Munich.

  • Mark

I am hoping they will play a friendly against my Monday Night Soccer team.  I still haven’t heard back from the FO… we could fill atleast a hundread seats, maybe.

  • Brian

I know it’s not a big name team, but how about the Portland Timbers????

  • overmars

f the tree cutters, I would say a central american / south american, too bad most of us americans don’t know who they are, all we follow is the EPL.

  • beowuff

    So… I didn’t know Antarctica had a team…

  • Mark

No one would pay to go watch the Timbers lose.  Why would we pass up getting a world-renown to come Seattle?  A team from the meth-loving logging town down south is not a subsitute.

    Bad idea…

  • Bakwoodz

Please let it me man city! My second fav team next to the Sounders!( my home team had to make the jump to number one of course)
    bak

  • cdoom

The Friendlies make the team money.  65,000 plus.  And, don’t forget, they put Seattle onto the sports pages of Europe for a day, this keeps us in mind over there when players consider where to play in America.

i agree if it did kill momentum but remember, European teams play multiple committments all the time, various Cups, and UEFA are concurrent with EPL for example.  We should use the opportunity in Friendlies to get experience to our younger players, which is how I believe we did it last year.

  • Tim

I think Rangers would be cool. Give DMB a taste of the MLS. And what Seattle can offer a player. Please not Mexican teams that’s the worse football ever!!!!
