Sounders’ Mystery Match on March 11th

Are you craving the opportunity to watch Sounders FC in action? Can you wait until Philadelphia heads to the Emerald City on March 25th?

Well, you may not have to wait that long

This Wednesday (2/10) tickets will go on sale at 10a on Ticketmaster for a Seattle Sounders FC match at QWEST Field  on Thursday, March 11th against a mystery opponent. Kickoff is slated for 6p.

Tickets will be priced at $10, so who could the mystery opponent be?

It is highly unlikely that it this is one of the three International Friendlies that were promised to the Season Ticket Holders. Along with the relatively low admission fee, the logistics and hype  would be severely limited with only a 1 month lead up to a match with a large, well-known opponent. Plus, the European & South American Leagues are in full swing.

  • Will this be another benefit like the Charity Shield?
  • Could it be a scrimmage with another MLS squad? Last year, the Sounders held a closed scrimmage with Colorado two weeks before First Kick.
  • Could it be an intra squad scrimmage?
  • Could it be a scrimmage with a local USSF 2nd Division Team? The Sounders will be taking on Vancouver in Arizona this week so it could it be Part II? How about a scrimmage with the Portland Timbers?

Don’t forget… Tickets go on sale on Wednesday (2/10) @ 10a.

Who do you think? Who are you hoping for?

  • Jared Smith’s Hair

    PORTLAND!!! :-D

    or vancouver

  • Tim

A usl team like Vancouver, or some U-20 team from Europe.

  • billy

could this be some kind of test to see what the demand is for a unknown opponent? say like as a precursor to see if it is reasonable to host a CCL game at qwest?

  • jt

    WHO CARES!!!!  :D   :D

  • s4l

is this game included for season tix holders?

  • s4l

    i do!

  • MIKE

    probably not.

  • jt

I guess I need to state clearly that I’m excited to see the boys on the pitch before 3/25.  Who we play doesn’t matter in the bigger scheme, and since it’s being sold at $10 a ticket, I’ll assume it isn’t part of the STH package.

  • soundergrl

will sth get first dibs on our own seats?

  • MIKE

With the pricing scheme, I’m going to bet that it is all GA with access to limited sections. Just a guess though.

  • jt

I would expect a good showing by the supporter groups, so if you’ve ever wanted to pogo with ECS or chill with friends that happen to be in another section, complete GA would be perfect!

  • Blue Eyed Buddhist

I know who it is… and everyone is going to want to be sure they make it to this match!

  • malcontentjake

thumbs down! They give us meaningless pre-season exhibitions at Qwest, but not CCL or USOC. What planet are ownership/management living on!?

  • rassilon42

I know people want to complain about CCL or USOC in qwest, though I imagine the main reason this is in quest is to that they can “pratice” game day operations before the opener (and make some $$$ too).

  • Me

Wonder what the chances are this will be televised?  Too bad it is midweek.

  • Mark

Tell me tell me tell me!!! Oh well… I guess I will see when I go to the match.

  • Mark

I don’t want to deal with Portland supporters here in Seattle.  Atleast Vancouver has class…

  • Mark

I agree, people are starving for some sort of action.  I can see this preseason game selling a lot of tickets.  By the time CCL or USOC comes around not as many people are willing to go to extra games.

  • Coug

Awesome!  But first the CBA needs to be taken care of.

  • jt

Please let me forget that the CBA really dictates things above and beyond what the FO has setup…  At least I don’t have airline tickets…

  • DaveS

Or  you could tell us… :)

  • Cornchops

    You are annoying.

  • Brian

    I’ll bet money it’s Portland!

  • Brian

    Hey that’s an imposter!

  • MIKE
  • Ryan in Bellingham

Interesting. I sent my STH rep an e-mail asking for details and got a response that there is no match confirmed for that date… and the TM page is now pulled for that match.

  • Brandon

It is Portland just announced on Sounders website

  • Brian

I have the avatar set up at home, but I mostly read this website at work.

  • Mark

Brandon is right… check it out here. Just what Seattle needs, a bunch of Portland Timbers in town for a mid-week game.  There is a reason I moved away from there.

  • Brandon

Do you actually think the atmosphere will be that good in a preseason game against Portland or do you guys think that because it is portland and a rival it will be a great atmosphere.

  • Mark

I see a few things happening:
    A) A semi-large (semi because it is a weekday game) conglomerate of Timbers fans will come up to hope for their USL team beating our MLS team.
    B) Large turn-out of Sounders supporters groups because they want to support the Sounders in the rivalry, not because they care about the outcome.
    C) A smaller number other Sounder STH because it is a mid-week game and it doesn’t matter.
    D) No play-time for star players (Fred, Freddy, Keller) because they don’t want them to get hurt because the game doesn’t matter.
    E) Overall an above average atmosphere for a pre-season game because of the rivalry and because people want to watch soccer.
