Sounders to Face Portland Timbers on 3/11

It seems that after our findings yesterday… that Sounders FC will take on the Portland Timbers on March 11th in a match for charity.

Tickets will go on sale at 10a on Wednesday, Feb. 10th.

Details from the club…

RENTON, Wash. – The Seattle Sounders FC announced today details for the club’s inaugural “Community Shield” match, which will take place on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m. on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field. The Sounders FC will face the Portland Timbers of the USL in the pre-season training match.

General Admission tickets for the event will go on sale Wednesday, February 10, at 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth (6-17). Children under the age of six are free. Tickets will be available by calling 800-745-3000, all Ticketmaster outlets and the Qwest Field Box Office.

Proceeds from the match will benefit the team’s four community partners: Boys and Girls Club of Washington State, Save the Children, Seattle SCORES and Washington Youth Soccer. Following the match the teams will sign autographs from the field.

“The ‘Community Shield’ match will be a great opportunity for our fans to watch the team and give back to the community before the regular season begins on March 25,” said Sounders FC general manager Adrian Hanauer.

Following in the steps of other MLS teams, the model for the event is based upon the “Charity or Community Shield” matches in England, where they are a long standing tradition featuring the champions of the FA Premier League against the winners of the FA Cup with all proceeds going to charity.

As previously announced, Seattle opens preseason play on Wednesday in Casa Grande, Ariz. against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Sounders FC will play three matches during the La Manga Cup II in Spain, from February 18 through February 26. The final preseason game is on March 19 at the Colorado Rapids.

Seattle hosts Philadelphia Union to open the MLS season March 25 before a national television audience on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

Woah boy… this will be epic.

I will repost what I put on the other topic:

I see a few things happening:
    A) A semi-large (semi because it is a weekday game) conglomerate of Timbers fans will come up to hope for their USL team beating our MLS team.
    B) Large turn-out of Sounders supporters groups because they want to support the Sounders in the rivalry, not because they care about the outcome.
    C) A smaller number other Sounder STH because it is a mid-week game and it doesn’t matter.
    D) No play-time for star players (Fred, Freddy, Keller) because they don’t want them to get hurt because the game doesn’t matter.
    E) Overall, an above average atmosphere for a pre-season game because of the rivalry and because people want to watch soccer.

I hope we sell 68,000 tickets.

would love the thought… but i think we are looking at 20k here for a practice match. i know it is portland, and cheap prices… but will this sell out the lower bowl?

  • carella211

lock up your sheep! portland’s coming to town!

  • Gee

Does anyone know when the season tickets will be mailed out?

  • overmars

season tickets last year were mailed out in early march

  • Sam in Puyallup

Any word on a local telecast for this game?

  • Brian

So last year the timbers had a tifo of a lumberjack chopping down the space needle.  What can we do a tifo of?  Portland has no landmarks.  We can do one of sounder fans forcing a hippi to take a bath.

  • Brian

I’m sure Fox Sports would love to show this game if they don’t have anything else for that night.  They televised the last Sounders/Timbers game.

  • MIKE

The last Sounders/Timbers match was a USOC quarterfinal.
