calabro “i didn’t get it done”

first of all, full credit to don ruiz for his interview with KC, and you can read the whole article here.

i have got to give kevin a lot of credit, he knows that his strengths did not translate well for soccer.

“It’s disappointing,” he said. “I didn’t get it done. I don’t know how else to put it: I didn’t get it done. I didn’t have the quality of work that in my estimation was what the fans deserve or the product deserved.

Now having said that, it also comes down to quality of work. I did not give them the quality of the work that this project and the fans deserve. I’ve never heard Arlo, but I know that he has an extensive soccer background, so without having heard him ever before I would have to say they probably have made the right hire”

He goes on to say

“I appreciate them giving me an opportunity in the first place. They knew I wasn’t a soccer guy, and I never professed to be a soccer guy. But they gave me an opportunity. That’s why we both agreed to do a one-year contract and then take a look at it, and hey, if you like it, it’s working, then on we go. And if you don’t like it or it’s not working, then we’ll come up with some other plan. Everybody was up front about the way this thing was going to go this year.”

This isn’t a post to pick on Kevin, but I was sad to hear that he had “never heard arlo”.  This means he didn’t go back and watch the Houston game that he missed.  Draw your own conclusions on that one… but i would think rewatching the games that he missed would be the top of his list.

Ok, enough of that. I have always liked Kevin, I think he is a class act and good luck to him.

I was excited that KC signed on to do this to start.  But he fell short bad.  He’s the best at calling basketball and I thought that would translate, but it didn’t.  It sucks that he didn’t go back and listen to the games he didn’t do the play by play on.  I hate to say it, but that does say something about his professionalism and how serious he was about the sport.  To take it a step further, he doesn’t do much to promote soccer or the Sounders on his radio program either.  I’ve since switched back to listening to Gas and Groz during that timeslot.  Gas and Groz probably do the most with regards to talking about soccer and the Sounders of all the sports radio DJ’s.

It’s too bad that the Calabro experiment didn’t work out — he is a top-notch basketball announcer and (by the sound of things) was a Seattle institution for a lot of years.  I heard him on ESPN the other day calling a Nuggets game, and he was great.  I was reminded how good he can be in his element.  It’s too bad that he couldn’t or wouldn’t translate that talent to a soccer environment.  Good luck to him going forward.

Was the game that Arlo called also a radio simulcast?  I think that not only did Kevin have a hard time learning the game… but it was difficult for him to describe the game to the radio folks at the same time.  TV broadcasts are extra annoying if there’s too much talking.  Hopefully that’s not as big of an issue for Arlo since he’s more familiar with the game…

Just to echo the sentiments expressed earlier, KC is a phenomenal talent when he’s in his element. I feel, while KC wasn’t a negative to last year’s proceedings, you’re right, he didn’t add a whole heck of a lot. What KC does well no one else can touch. Can you imagine Hall-of-Famer Dave Niehaus calling a basketball game? <<shudder>> This town is blessed with H of F caliber sportscasters like Dave, Kevin, Steve and, yes, Mr. Rondeau too. I am hoping Arlo will soon join that elite crowd calling the ‘Beautiful Game’ for Sounders FC for many years to come.   8-)

I did like Kevin, and wont miss Vain Vaney one bit. The best news for me is that Arlo is alone and will be calling simulcast for radio all year. That radio work is what makes the broadcast crisp. It’s a fantastic that our local broadcasters understand that. Now what about our gal Lisa Gangel? I sure hope she’ll be around again.

I used to listen to Sounders games on the radio. Never minded Calabro at all. Sad to see him go.

Really Kevin?  I went to every home match and then came home to watch the match again on Tivo.  I don’t think you put as much effort into it as the average fan did, Kevin.  Glad to see Arlo on board.  Not sad to see KC go.
