[Rumor] Swiss International to Head to Seattle

Posted by Mike on February 14, 2010 · Under Blaise Nkufo, Rumors · View Comments

nkufoSwiss International Footballer Blaise Nkufo is rumoured to be heading to Sounders FC during this summer’s Open Transfer window according to Blick (a Swiss Tabloid).

He has been playing for FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie since 2003, scoring 111 goals in that time span.

The 34-year old has appeared in 13 matches for the Swiss National Team in the 2002 World Cup and 2010 WC Qualifying.

  • overmars

    no thank you

  • Nick

“No thank you” to a guy who has 111 goals in seven seasons in the Netherlands’ most prominent league?

Not to mention seven goals as a Swiss national player.

When this team desperately needs a finisher?

    Umm, ok….

I’ll take him, we’ll send you to the Netherlands. :-P

  • DangerNut

    A finisher!

  • MIKE

    Exactly. He is a finisher!

He is performing at a top level in the top Dutch League. I’m sure he’s good for a season and a halfi n rave green.

  • billy

    yes, please.

  • overmars

he is rapidly dropping off in production and will join the Sounders, what in july at age 35? rumors have the salary cap only being raised to 2.6 million so what sort of salary can we offer the guy? a year and a half total at age 36? let’s not become no-speed geriatric DC!  what are we doing with montero?

my name is marc overmars, I am dutch, and I approve this message.

  • yamsmos

I think there is something to be said for what overmars is pointing out… this isn’t a slam dunk…

    yes. 111 goals

no.  he is 35 years old.

yes. 68 goals in the last 4 years

    no. just the dutch league

yes. Oh, the dutch league that is better than the MLS? yes that dutch league.

without knowing much about this guy… i will reserve judgment… but he knows how to bang in goals… and i doubt it is by running past the defence b/c at that age, he likely wasn’t doing it in the eredivisie.

i wouldn’t be bummed at this signing… someone to push montero and jacqua couldn’t be a bad thing.

  • randle

Looks like this guy is worth the risk. If he produces, awsome. If gets the rest to finish thru goal, all the better.

8 goals in 18 league matches so far this season. Little off from the last three.

If he blows? Leave for/trade to Vancouver. Think I read his wife and kids are there.

  • dundasfc

If you have questions on this guy’s finishing, Go to the FCtwente site and watch the highlights between FCTwente and Sparta Rotterdam.  Strong and agressive.  I could see him doing it for a couple more years.  Go to http://www.fctwente.nl/eredivisielive/   then, click “populair”  , watch the Sparta vs FCTwente video.  FCTwente is wearing away blues and he is Number 9.  Enjoy

    No old euro please.

i have a feeling he would kick ass

  • kyle

many complaints about his age… kellers 5 years older, tyrone’s the same age. he’s fine if he’s fit.

  • Mark

He looks like a great oppprtunity…
    1. We could use another big forward (6’2″, 180 lbs) who knows how to finish goals.  I love Montero, but he just gets pushed around.
    2. He may be old, but he has lots of pro experince; that is something our young club could use.
    3. According to the Blick article, it sounds like he wants to come to Seattle.  This means that, unlike Freddy, we wouldn’t have to coax him to stay here.
    4. It would be another semi-high profile transfer from Europe.  Nothing does more for our club’s profile than showing we attract people from all over the world.

  • phil

The book on him is that he’s a good finisher in the air – That will make our set pieces more effective.  Here’s a complete list of all the current SSFC players with good arial abilities/instincts/aggressiveness…  ()

  • Tim Ballard

It would be okay if we didnt over pay.

  • Nick Jacob

    A different angle on this.

FIFA 10′s ranking of Nkufo is a 74.

Ljungberg’s rating is a 76 and Montero’s is also a 74. They are the only two Sounders (besides Keller, who is a 77) in the 70′s.

    Jaqua is a 66 and Zakuani is a 64.

As far as Eredivisie being a crap league, it’s certainly a better league than MLS according to FIFA 10.

    5-star teams: 0
    4-star teams: 2
    3.5 star teams: 3
    3-star teams: 4
    2.5 star teams: 8
    2-star teams: 1

In the game, the Sounders are a 2.5 star team, and no MLS team does better than a 2.5-star. Two teams actually have 1.5 stars.

If we get the chance, we should sign this guy.

  • MIKE

Thank you EA Sports for being the vioice of reason! 8-)

  • yamsmos

i don’t think anyone thinks eredivisie is a crap league… it is a solid league as far as i am concerned. this league does suffer from losing far too much talent to the more wealthy teams throughout europe however. far easier said than done, but if only they could hold onto that talent… if every player that started their career in a specific league had to stay, eredivisie would be one of the best in the world.

  • Nick Jacob

yamsmos, maybe not on here they don’t, but some were talking trash on other soccer forums.

Anyway, just thought that’d be a fun angle on the rumor, haha.

  • footballforall

I’m late to this post but to add… he scored 5 goals in 2010 world cup qualifiers. Who on the Sounders has scored 5 goals in international competition in the past year? If he scored 5 goals in WC qualifiers as a 40 year old, I’d take him.
