The Roster Headed to La Manga

The Sounders are en route to the La Manga Cup right now to participate in a pre-season tournament in Southeast Spain taking on clubs from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

The club released the traveling squad for the trip to the Iberian Peninsula where some surprises are evident…

Goalkeepers: Derby Carillo, Chris Eylander, Kasey Keller and Patrick Lane.

Defenders: Taylor Graham, Leo Gonzalez, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Patrick Ianni, Tyrone Marshall, Jeff Parke, James Riley, Zach Scott, Nathan Sturgis, Tyson Wahl and Jamel Wallace.

Midfielders: Osvaldo Alonso, Michael Fucito, Josh Gardner, Stephen King, Freddie Ljungberg, Lamar Neagle, Sanna Nyassi and Peter Vagenas.

Forwards: David Estrada, Roger Levesque, Fredy Montero, Tye Perdido and Steve Zakuani.

You will notice right off the bat there is no Nate Jaqua. The Oregon native is staying in Seattle still nursing his lower abs/groin. Goalkeeper Terry Boss is staying in Seattle as he nurses an ankle injury.

You will notice the Jeff Parke. The defender was selected by the Sounders in the 2008 Expansion Draft from the New York Red Bulls, but did not sign with the league as he attempted to play in Europe. After that failed attempt, he played with the Vancouver Whitecaps for some time last season before moving on while Sounders FC held on to his player’s rights. He is an adequate defender who could lend MLS experience and depth on the back line.

Missing from the overseas roster- Israeli midfielder/attacker Jacob Luski and Chinese midfielder Gao Leilei.

Just to note and i have posted in MattG blog too that i’m hearing conflicting stores on Garder traveling team. I’m told at Seattletimes blog that Gardner isn’t traveling.  So not sure which is acturate that he is or isn’t traveling.

  • MIKE

Yeah, I saw that too anonymous. I guess we’re just TBD on Mr. Gardner.

  • gstommylee

    bleh that was me

  • Mark

I guessing there was too much trouble getting the Israeli and the Chinese player’s visas to travel to Spain.

  • gstommylee

Mike  MattG just commented that Josh Gardner is not traveling on the blog regarding traveling squad.

  • Ben

I wish we could drop Jaqua, King, Sturgis and most definitely Vagenas. They are all relatively more money than they are worth. And then we could afford 2 REALLY good international transfers.

  • MIKE

    King @ $34k is cheap.
