Sounders to Make “Major Announcement”

Posted by Mike on March 3, 2010 · Under News · View Comments

We got word that the Sounders will be making a “Major Announcement” on Thursday at 10a. And that the subject of the announcement won’t be physically present.

Who (or what) do you think it will be? A Player? An International Friendly Opponent? A Player’s Union and Owners Agreement?

What will you place your money on?

  • Mark Barany

I was hoping that you guys would have the answer…that’s why I drifted over to your website. But I’ll just put money on N’Kufo because that’s what I really really want to hear. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a striker that actually has height, can push people around and win balls in the air and muscle through crowds for shots on goal? Jacqua’s a nice guy, but maybe too nice on the field and oft-injured.

  • MIKE

personally I don’t think it will be a Saborio or Nfuko announcement. It’s gotta be bigger than that.

  • MIKE

We know some stuff, but this ain’t one of the times.

  • Phil

Bigger than Nkufo?! I’d pee my pants if its a bigger signing. I never wanted to pee my pants more than I’ll want to tomorrow. Is that weird?

  • Nick Jacob

    Wow, really? Sheesh.

  • Nick Jacob

From the Times on the 1st:

“The team confirmed that Costa Rican international Álvaro Saborío will not be in training this week and declined to comment on Swiss forward Blaise Nkufo, who had been linked to a summer move to the team.”

  • Nick Jacob

    From the Tribune’s Don Ruiz:

“the reason I’m thinking “person” rather than mere opponent-announcement is that the press conference will involve a conference call. Now granted, I guess it could be the owner or coach of some international club announcing a friendly.. But that’s not the way I’m reading the tea leaves yet.”

  • ALEX Y

wow it must be a big Announcement cant wait to see but it better not be a bad one like keller retiring or montero leaving

  • Nick Jacob

Dude! Didn’t even think of that. How dare you bring something negative to this thread! Lol

  • Nick Jacob

Btw, Keller’s not retiring. Montero could hypothetically be leaving though.

    *Really* doubt it though.

  • Aaron

Don’t see how it can be a player addition. No CBA means no second DP slot unless they traded for one and we missed it… I think it’s a friendly with Man U. Fergusen on the call.

  • doug

the sounders brought in 2 of the top 5 clubs in the world last year, they wont bring in anything less than one other top 10 team this year would be my guess. ac milan, inter, or manchester utd (theres only one real team in manchester)

  • Mark Barany

Ok..after reading a bunch of articles I am completely convinced that it will be an announcement about the signing of Alavaro Saborio. I noticed all the sly comments from the Sounders front office that didn’t deny Alvaro was joining the team, but instead responded that he will not be joining the training camp. Not, he will not be joining the team. Only time will tell.

  • Steve

How about free craft beers in the stadium?
We are switching entire rosters with Barca?
They are moving me to the best seats in the house?
Or I guess I could settle for N’Kufo

  • Brian

Could the annoucement be that Portland hasn’t met the requirements for joining the MLS and will not have a team next year?

  • Mark

I am guessing it is a player annoucement.  I don’t think they would make such a big deal about a friendly opponent.  Or atleast they didn’t last year.

I had a dream last night that Sigi annouced we were signing Ronaldo.

  • Steve

Agreed on the “size” of the annoucement.  I wouldn’t think a major annoucement would be a friendly.  Most know Man U, Man City, and Tottenham are coming through the US so I don’t think that would be a major one, maybe a big one or a normal annoucement, but Major says player

  • MIKE

To be honest, I think announcing friendlies with a Manchester club, Real Madrid, and a Mexican club is a bigger announcement for most of the Sounder faithful than saying Blaise Nfuko is headed to the rave green side in July.

    Just my $.02 :-$

  • yamsmos

well then i think many will be disappointed =-O

  • jt

This would cause major drinking to break out in ECS :D   I would hope the team would respect the other employers in Seattle by delaying that type of announcement until 4:30pm.

  • jt

The idea of a second DP without a CBA is a non-starter.  Player money is tight until there is a real CBA in effect.  A friendly during the World Cup break would be ideal, and said club would be on the call.

  • Steve

Is it on the radio?  KIRO has the national show and KJR wouldn’t cover it, but is there anyway for us to listen?

  • Mark Barany

    The Soudners grab N’kufo

  • Mark Barany

I can’t believe that the announcement was actually the big announcement everyone was hoping for. This front office never ceases to amaze me! Blaise N’Kufo. If you are not familiar with this guy, look him up. I think he’s pretty much been one of the top three scorers in the Dutch league for the last 10 years! 20+ goals a season.
