One of the Sounders Players rumors have been made true. Today, Sounders FC announced the signing of Swiss International footballer, Blaise Nkufo.

The 6’2″ Striker has been a member of the Swiss National Team since 2002 earning 27 caps and scoring 7 goals- 5 of which came in Switzerland’s 2010 World Cup qualifying matches.

The Zaire-born Nkufo has been playing for FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie since 2003, scoring 111 goals in that time span- leading his club in each season.

Last week he sustained a hamstring injury, but it should not sideline him for long

Nkufo will join Sounders FC following the conclusion of the World Cup in the July transfer window.
Sounders FC Release

The Seattle Sounders FC have signed Switzerland National Team forward Blaise Nkufo, it was announced today. The all-time scoring leader for Holland’s FC Twente, Nkufo will join Sounders FC on a free transfer after completing his commitments to Twente and the national team. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Nkufo, 34, has scored over 200 goals for club and country. Now in his seventh season with Twente, last August he became the club career scoring leader and now has 111 goals. He has nine league goals, with 13 in all competitions.

Nkufo (pronounced Blehz KOOH-fo) has been capped 27 times by Switzerland, scoring seven goals. Five of those goals came during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

“I am really motivated. It is a big challenge because as a player and as a man, I wish to settle and live in Seattle,” said Nkufo. “For now, I remain totally committed, totally focused on Twente, and doing whatever I can to help them win the league and the cup.”

Twente, located in Enschede, has lost only once in 25 matches and trails PSV Eindhoven by one point in the Eredivisie, Holland’s first division. Twente plays Feyenoord Rotterdam in a Dutch cup semifinal on March 24 and earlier reached the UEFA Europa League’s round of 32.

“When I arrive in Seattle, I’m not just coming to play, I’m coming to succeed,” added Nkufo. “That is my goal. I feel I can contribute because of my experience, my spirit, my commitment and my goals. Of course, that’s the key, goals and assists. I’ve contributed that before and wish to do the same for the Sounders.”

“When I came last winter to visit,” he said, “I was impressed with the organization, the stadium and the training facilities. The Sounders showed that they want me and I have a very good feeling about our future.”

“Blaise is a proven goal scorer who’s had a good run with the Swiss national team and a tremendous career at Twente,” said Sigi Schmid, Sounders FC coach. “He is a player that knows how to find space in the box at appropriate moments.”

“We’re obviously very excited because we’ve had our eyes on Blaise for quite a while now,” said Adrian Hanauer, Sounders FC general manager. “He’s a big, strong presence in the middle, and he gives us a slightly different look. He is also a player of tremendous character, and will contribute his knowledge and leadership to our team.”

Getting five goals from Nkufo during qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Switzerland will join Chile, Honduras and Spain in Group H. The Swiss open play on June 16 against Spain, the reigning European champion, in Durban, South Africa.

Nkufo has led Twente in scoring each of the past six years, with 21 or more in each of the last three seasons. He has scored 129 goals in 260 appearances for the club in all competitions. He previously played for clubs in Switzerland, Qatar and Germany.

Twente, coached by former England manager Steve McClaren, has finished among the Eredivisie’s top four each of the last four seasons, finishing runner-up in both the league and Dutch cup.

  • Steve

HELL YEAH!  Fourth on my list of wishes, but this could be a great combo up top now.

  • yamsmos

the competition up front just went from almost nothing, to intense… montero is looking over his houlder and that can only be a good thing.

  • Nick

    So stoked!! This is awesome!!

  • Phil

This is huge! I’m assuming we acquired a 2nd DP slot for this?

  • Steve

FL passing to FM and BN(?) can only mean good things.  Maybe FM can learn how to finish from him.  Too bad this didn’t happen earlier to have him in the begining of the year, but that happens.  We can really step up in the second half of the year and he will be in top shape.

  • Mark Barany

yamsmos, it’s not Montero looking over his shoulder. It’s Jacqua. In fact, it’s very apparent that N’Kufo is being brought in to replace Jacqua and be that big man to deliver more action inside the box that Montero can feed on. N’Kufo is very much like a slower, slightly less talented Drogba.

  • Nick

    Agreed. Jaqua’s in serious trouble.

  • Nick

And let’s face it. N’Kufo is much, much better than Jaqua. Shouldn’t even be a competition.

    Great signing.

  • yamsmos

i don’t disagree with the jaqua comments… but my thinking here is that jaqua already knows that he has to work for his spot… in my opinion, montero assumes his spot. if this helps him get his ass in gear b/c his spot isn’t guaranteed anymore, that can only be a good thing.

  • Mark Barany

This signing is going to make watching Switzerland in the World Cup so fun! We can now watch our soon to be Superstar show off his talent to the world!

  • Steve

And this works perfectly since we lost Le Toux, he can keep his #9.

Yeah hopefully Jaqua steps up and pushes Montero and challenges him for a spot in the second half.  It is Montero’s to lose

  • jt

Yea, Nate is having to look over his shoulder.  Only concern is USOC matches, where the number of internationals is limited.  Kind of crazy – I want to know what Freddie thinks of all this.

Upside: Talent coming after the break when the schedule goes to pot
Downside: Talent coming after the break to mess up any rhythm we have

  • Nick

    You’re right!

  • Anonymous

Good point. Will definitely help him to focus/hustle/step up his game.

  • MIKE

    I’ve seen pictures with Nkufo wearing, 9, 10, and 11. =-O

Not all at the same time of course…

  • Mark

Count me in! I am excited for another experienced power player!

If we want to up our level of play, we need people like Keller, Freddie, and N’Kufo who have played in the big leagues.

  • Steve

The video highlights I saw mainly had 9.  I wasn’t watching the number the entire time.

  • Dizzo_Dizzman

I’m happy.  We needed someone up front with size who isn’t afraid to bang (unlike Jaqua).

  • soundstorm

Just wish he had been here in training camp this spring.  I don’t know how it will work out but his productions is – what, sixteen goals a year in a very competitive league… so that could be tantamount to twenty in MLS.  With the two Freddies supplying him with the ball and Zack spreading the defence wide open by his speed;might be fun to watch!

  • soundersfcfanboy

    Good signing!

  • Gee

Looks like we got another Player to take PK’s, this signing is incredible, wish he was here for the full season this year!

  • Tim

There is good detail here on how Nkufo ended up with the Sounders.
