what are your feelings on parke making the team

this is more of a “forum” type of post… but we don’t have a forum, so there you go.

i want to hear what you guys feel about parke making the team and taking up a defensive roster spot… a defensive roster spot where we arguably have the most depth in the team.

i don’t know if i am just an overly bitter person, but part of me wants to tell him to “go find himself” for how he handled the whole sounders situation last year. he had every right to go try and make it in europe, and when we drafted him, we knew it was a very real situation… but then, when he didn’t make it, he seemed to just want to do anything, rather than play for the sounders. he f’d off to vancouver for a while, and that didn’t pan out either.

i am a big believer of second chances…. but this one seems rather weird to me.

is he only back with us b/c he can’t make it in any other league and well “playing for the sounders is better than nothing”?

did he see the amazing atmosphere in seattle and decide “oh ok, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad there?”

did he have a massive change of heart, atone for his sins, and we should welcome him with open arms?

he is a very good defender, so he has that going for him, but he takes the place of another potential sounder that really wants to be on this team… when he effectively did “whatever” last year with his opportunity.

i know i don’t have all the facts, and i admit that. i can only comment on the information that is available to me…. hence why i open it up to you lot.

is there more to this than i have heard? should we welcome jeff with open arms and hug it out?

**of course if he makes the team i will be his biggest fan, buying his jersey and carrying his jock, but for now, it is time to scrutinize.

  • FO’d

he can ****ing **** off and go **** himself until his *** ****ing hurts for being such a ****ing **** ***** *** little *****.

Of course, this would all be subject to change should he run out there and acutally give a ****.

  • Gee

i was very bitter last year with his “too cool for School attitude”  if he does well yay! i am willing to forgive and forget on this one.

  • cl

I personally don’t care if he wants to be here or not.  Even if this is his best option for him now, his incentive will still be to play the best he can and fit into the team as best as possible to get playing time. (at worst, presumably he will have a better option later).  So if his best is better than another person on the team, regardless if they want to be here more or not…I’ll take him.  Besides, we could benefit from trade/transfer later.  I’m all for continuing to upgrade the team position by position.

    We need forwards not defenders.

  • LJ

I’m still holding a grudge too.  Guess he has a lot of proving to do to make me change my thoughts.

  • Doug

You absolutely, positively don’t have all the facts, but I forgive you–it’s the Sounder passion talking! ; )

Okay, you’re holding a grudge about what exactly? The fact that long before we stupidly selected him he stated emphatically that he was going to Europe? I don’t get it. Not at all. There’s nothing to see here, move along. Pissed that he came back and didn’t immediately beg the Sounders to please, please keep me, even if it means sitting on the bench the rest of the season? We don’t even know that the Sounders wanted him and, in fact, if memory serves, we pretty much released him, not vice-versa. Finally, he’s human. He comes back after plenty of controversy here, fails there (miserably, because they didn’t want the druggie), and takes a while to find himself. I’m cutting the guy some major slack. I think you should too.

Taking the place of what defender exactly? Ianni? The human mistake machine? The guy I have predicted will not even be playing in MLS in 3 years? Please tell me you are NOT an Ianni fan. Please. Because I’ve followed that guy since he was 15 and he is no one’s idea of a starting d-back. Besides, and I want to be clear about this–his chosen position is defensive mid. You heard right, d-mid (and he’s far better there). Ask him. So we’re going to keep a guy who is barely 6′, can’t jump, and has average speed over Parke who was a two-time all MLS defender and all-star? He has gotten some major sniffs (before the controversy) from the national team (did Ianni?).

Finally, NO ONE wants to be here!! WTF?!?!?!?!? Ask any player on the Sounders right now if he’d rather be here starting than somewhere in Europe and the answer will be clear–I’ll take the money and prestige, thank you very much. Parke is no different in that regard than any other player in MLS? It’s like you’re pissed that a guy with 20 wins in the Mexican Baseball League wants to play for the Yankees. Even the worst club over there pays twice as much as over here. These guys are professionals, let’s not lose sight of that. Mexican baseball is actually a pretty high quality game, but it isn’t MLB.

    more to follow…….

  • Doug

Parke may be the fastest c-back in MLS. If not, it’s very close. He’s got average size at 6′ to 6’1″, but is solid in the air and has a long-time defensive player’s timing and sense of danger. This isn’t just anyone we’re talking about–he’s a better player than Marshall. He’s a better player than 90% of the guys starting at CB in MLS right now.

What’s not to like about this? Marshall has got one, perhaps two more seasons (generously) and then he’s gone. Ianni is NOT the answer and if he is, I’m soooo over the Sounders.

So, yea, I think Parke should stay (as long as he’s earning his keep) and that “Sounder ’til I die attitude? How’d that work out with the Sonics? I love this team, but I don’t have any illusions about what this is–a business.

Yup, I had plenty to say…… now let’s make up!  :*

  • Steve

If he is good, I don’t really care.  If he is ok, then I wont cheer for him.  I mean I want to win right now and if he can help, all for it.

  • jz

I don’t blame him for giving Europe a shot.  He didn’t owe the Sounders anything–he never signed a contract to play here.  He took a shot at the brass ring and now he is back and looking to contribute to this team.  If he is better than our other options, and he makes the team better, then I’ll welcome him with open arms and hopefully sing his praises when he takes teh field.

  • yamsmos

ok, no pissing contest here… but a couple things…

    - i said i had no problem with him going to europe and we knew we were getting into that so no, i am not upset about him trying for that at all. but when he didn’t get it, he seemed to want to do anything other than play for seattle

    - whether or not parke is 10 times better or worse than ianni is moot to this. i didn’t comment on his ability… so no need to debate that.

finally, from the research that i did BEFORE writing this up, it was parke that told the sounders that he wasn’t interested. clearly, this post by romero doesn’t say how/why/what/etc….

    http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/sounders/2009/03/26/parke_team_part_ways.html

parke has had some troubles, and i already stated i am happy to give him a second chance… but do i have a bit of a grudge  that a guy who could have signed on with us AFTER the belgium thing fell through? yeah i guess i do a little.

  • Doug

Yup, I know the reference you supplied, but it doesn’t say if (1) Seattle was willing to pay him a competitive wage, (2) told him he’d likely be sitting, since we had our line-up set, (3) this is just a day-by-day thing. So we don’t really know what happened there, but fair enough, he DID leave the team. So I’d say that his not staying here might have been as much about us as him.

And, hey, that all came out way more aggressive than I intended–Parke is a sore point with me, because I think he’s gotten the bums rush. Then again, he probably had some of that coming.

You didn’t comment on Parke’s ability but you did intimate that we’d be short-changing other players on our team who have been here longer and been more loyal. Ianni is the only game-ready CB we’ve got on our team…. Although I’ve got to say I love Taylor if the guy would ever piece together two months without getting injured.

Sorry if that all sounded like an attack or something…. it truly wasn’t. You asked a fair question and got a heavy answer.

  • Mark

There seem to be 2 ways to view Parke as he relates to the Sounders
    1) As a skilled foot who can add to the stats
    2) As a Seattle Sounder player/teammate

Here are my thoughts on each view:
    1) As a skilled player I don’t know much about him.  However, from reading the other posts on this forum, it sounds like he could add to our defense. Maybe?  We already have a pretty solid defense. Though I do agree with Doug that Ianni could use some work.  So, as a skilled foot, I would accept Parke if Sigi feels like he could add to the defense.

    2) We already know a lot about Parke as a Seattle Sounder Teammate, he doesn’t want to be one.  He wants the money and the fame that comes with being good at soccer.  Who can blame him?  I probably would look to make more than the $30k as a Sounder if I was in his shoes.  However, if it is between Parke and a player who actually wants to play for the Sounders; I would choose the latter.  We already have a lot of players who wanted to be a Sounder from the start; I hope Sigi takes that into account when he makes up the roster.

Conclusion: We want more Sounders like N’Kufo, who really really wants to be in Seattle playing for the Soudners.

  • yamsmos

it is all good. however whatever you think about ianni, our defense was the best last year, and adding another defender, now matter how good, is curious to say the least.

if we score more this year… then it is a moot point.

for the record… i actually like ianni more than you, but who doesn’t ;)

  • jt

Here’s the best part – we need to have a roster spot for N’Kufo at mid-season.  If he makes the first half fine, but it may be his ass we drop midway through the 2010 campaign.

  • TL

In response to the fact that we already had one of the best defenses last year and adding him would be a curious move.  The one thing missing in that is the extra games in the Champions league.  Also, the fact that we were very lucky last year, to not get many injuries to the starters.  I think, bring him in.  As long as he doesn’t have an attitude problem, then we just added a player who had quite a bit of European interest.  Without the drug enhancing deal, he most likely would still be there.  You don’t get opportunities like this too often.  If he wants to go, then he will play his ass off to get there.

  • yamsmos

    good point.

ok, let’s find some other news…. i have a lot of uninteresting things to talk about…. but i just can’t wait to post on an actual game.

  • evan eleven

trade him to Philly for LeToux
