Costa Rica US Wcup Soccerwhy type a headline other than that… it is quite simply the best nickname of all time.

so back in december i approved of the landon donovan to everton loan. no need to rehash my logic here, you can read if you like.

well the next few days may prove how i was.

i thought the risk of losing another player from the MLS to europe for half a season was pretty small. well here we are 3 months later and LD has been quite impressive in the EPL, helping revive evertons premiership year. if they had their way, they would keep him until the end of the year.

will the MLS let this stand?

i sure as hell hope not.  you could see them making the exception with golden balls just given his status, but how lame would it be if the handful of mls players who were good enough to go on loan to an epl, serie a or la liga team, always missed the first 4 months of the season?

2 month loans in the offseason = good for MLS recognition and stature

6 month loans where players are being returned 1/2 way through MLS season = degrading the league

not that i give a rip if LA fans have the pain of not having their 2 best players until july… that part would be pretty funny, but if it started to happen to all teams, what a pain in the ass that would be.

I think for the sake of Donavan, if he really wants to play in the Premiership, he should make a full transfer over to Everton. To be honest, he belongs there and will only get better under English development. And him developing is a good thing for the USA National team, which I think is vastly more important than the MLS being we need to prove to the world that we can play this sport too. Him being the leader and heart of the national team, we want him at his full potential.

that, i have no problem with…. it is this crap 6 month loan precident that seems to be starting that i hate.

  • MIKE

That picture is WAY to big for the front page… >:o

  • yamsmos

ha. well then write something…. so i can stop putting up this filler crap

  • Office worker

As a request, can you never post half nude pictures of landon donovan on this site ever again.  I’m reading the post at work, only have a co-worker walk in and start talking to me while a boyish looking man is on my screen.  Needless to say a bit awkward.  I’m pretty sure my co-worker doesn’t read gosounders.com (althought she should) and isn’t up to date on the latest posts.

  • yamsmos

oh man…. that just made my day!!!!!

but request understood. i will find something a little more ‘appropriate’

however, i do have a plan of using oktoberfest beer woman holding beers to illustrate the number of beers fueling my drunk posts in the future… hoepfully that will fly for you.

  • Office worker

Although I have no problem with homosexuals.  I would much prefer an attractive woman holding large quantities of beer.  Thanks.

what is worse? having a handful of players playing half the season but knowing that eventually they will finish their career for your team or in the MLS or signing young stars to bolt after 2 years never fully reaping the benefits of a fulfilling career?

  • yamsmos

gee, i don’t think those are the only 2 options….

i chose option C… continue to raise the game/pay/prestige etc of the MLS so that great players stay home, and we attract other great players from around the world.

far off as that may seem, i think this is a case of needing to fake it until we make it. i.e. we can’t let these types of deals become normal or it will inhibit the growth of this league substantially.

i hope a lot of the young players these days will look at adu, edu, donovan (the first time), altidore to some degree etc and think that the grass isn’t always greener.

  • Mark

awesome! I can picture the awkwardness…

You know, I’d always thought that the hefty extension MLS/Galaxy signed him to was just a way of ensuring they’d get fair value for him. I’m not so sure anymore, but I read recently that Ives thinks all this Bruce Arena/MLS talk is just a way of inflating his transfer fee. Good business, if true, but It also makes sense that they just don’t want to lose any more stars from this league, especially a star like Donovan playing for a flagship franchise like the Galaxy (although WE’RE the flagship now, aren’t we?!?)

At any rate, I agree, not so hot on the coming in and doing a half season. I’m not sure it denigrates the league as much as it short changes the fans and the players on the team who have been loyal and been there the entire time. That said, it happens in Europe all the time. Of course, this ain’t Europe.

For the record, I like Option C, too…..

eventually as MLS teams get a larger share of the transfer fees from these players they can start to keep a couple at home.

I think Landon should stay only because there’s no need to return if the players are just going to be striking on the 24th…  Freddie must be kicking himself for returning and believing all was okay.
