sounders beat union… the beer report

so by my count. this is a 9 beer report. and even as i write that, i feel somewhat sober, which is pretty sad for me in many ways if you think about it.

all in all a good win on a sloppy night. nobody is going to write home about an amazing match of footy that they just watch, b/c that is not what we saw tonight. we saw a sloppy game that can be blamed much, but not all, on the weather.

no doubt the rain on the turf makes handling balls harder than normal (insert beavis comment here), but the sounders can not place full blame on this.

as for the firtst goal, as much as i have ridden montero and zakuani over the last year for their lack of passing and creativity, especially given their skill, their intellect and passing were very much a big part of the first goal.

the best part of he first goal was montero’s pass. we have never seen a pass out of him like that before. it was sly. it was deft. it was subtle. it played the man on… call it whatever you want, but that pass, made the goal. zakuani made a great pass into evans who, and lets be honest here, just put the ball on goal, and 9 times out of 10, should have been saved, but it wasn’t.  so i am well pleased…. a great pass from montero, a very good pass from zakuani… those are things from them that we need. steve can run very fast. montero can crack one like crazy from outside the box…  but great passing they are not known for.

and then shortly after, if i am not mistaken, steve went for his second assist of the night, only for levesque to kick it as high into the stands as possible. laughablele now that we won,  but not at the time.

the second and decisive goal came from a great alonso ball into montero,  for the beautiful diving header. i still swear montero was widly offsides, however i haven’t seen any replays yet, and i care very little since the call went our way.

a few more randomg thoughts b/ c this kid has to hit the sack.

- the rain sucked…and was it 10 degrees colder the second half? i swear it was

- my man crush on alonso is sure to continue another year… other than one memorablele give away, i saw him do nothing wrong.

- their red card was a tad harsh, but nice to see the new team getting the same treatment we got last year eh?

- le touxs non goal for offsides… looked like onsides from where i was. nice to see le toux out there and here is to him getting a hatrick next match.

- our midfield lost its shape for much of the first half, but i thought we were much better the second.

- levesque was VERY anonymous much of the game. was it because he really did nothing? or did his flattened down wet hair just help me not notice?

- great atmosphere for pissing down rain. nice to get back to it eh?

for a nine beer report, i would think it would be funnier, drunker,or more controversial…. but this is going to go down as status quo….sorry about that. i don’t even have something funny to say about how lame this post is. sigh

who wants to take me up on the front page having the husky loss and not the sounders win? i have 20 on it.

8 beer post 8 beers was all i could find

**Update, given all the differences on if/how montero was on onside… i got this screen shot. it does look like he is onside… but JUST. he is pretty much dead even with the keeper, but given the way they are leaning, i have seen those given offsides

Brutal opening 10-15 mins for us. Roger needs to grow the locks back out. Don’t forget Fredy’s pass to Evans for the second goal in the opening match last season. Too bad that was about it for the year.

It was heartbreaking to see Seba out there working hard in another team’s kit, let alone the hideous monstrosity that is the Union’s away kit.

3 pints (um…points), 36k+, all in all a great night to be a Sounder!!!

  • Ryan

Montero was not offside, one of their defenders failed to leave the back post after Seitz cleared the corner which left Montero on. Also, LeToux was about a yard and a half offside, replays showed this to be the right call, which was a relief. Something you didn’t mention which I was impressed with was the improved play of Nyassi, and the aggressiveness of Fucito!

  • DaveS

Good to get the goal-that-broke-the-drought behind us.

  • bud

Zakuani’s ‘great pass’ was actually a deflection that landed at Evans’ feet, which was then slotted in.

The ESPN commentators called Alonso the MOTM.

  • LJ

Yep, I’m with Ryan on this, Montero was not offside.  I haven’t watched the replay yet, but it  happened on our end.  There was a Union player stuck on the other post standing even with their goalie.  Fun game!  Just so relieved that we were able to find the net!   And, I didn’t think Zak’s pass was deflected?  It looked solid from our angle on that side of the pitch.  I guess I need to watch my recording.

  • Brian

I did see the replay and yes there was a defender gaurding the post and ran out at the same time Montero was heading the ball into the goal.  Montero was on sides the whole time.

  • laurie

Excuse me?  Yamsmos?  You told me that the beer reports would all come with photos of German girls holding a number of beer steins which accurately reflected the amount of beer consumed.  And yet you post a photo of Kasey Keller instead? What’s up here?

  • Janette

Good call Laurie on the beer reports . . . . . what’s up with that?!  =)  I was soaked to the bone, but didn’t care because what a fun match that was to be at!  Unfortunately three out of the four other family members I went with were sick, so we left with 15 min left on the clock.  Only good thing about that (besides an easy car ride without traffic to I5) was that we were able to hear Arlo White a bit on the commentary . . . I really like that guy!  Did a great job with a true English flare.

  • Tim

The weather was nasty. No excuse to not control the ball. They are professionals. Over all great to be back at it and score 2 exciting goals.

  • yamsmos

yeah, i posted from my wifes computer, and thre aren’t as many girls holding beer pictures downloaded on that one… i just put one up, but i willb e better than that laurie… i am sorry to dissapoint.

  • yamsmos

ok, so i still haven’t watched the replay, but i know about the guy on the post… but the keeeper was out off his line, and it was that which made him offsides… i think :-S going to have to go watch it again.

  • DaveS

I rewatched on espn360 last night. He was onside by at least two feet. By the time he headed the ball, he was in what would have been an offside position but dude on the right post was napping and kept him onside until ball was already en route.

  • FO’d

    Here we are mate!
Next time let’s have a looker!

  • yamsmos

AHHH, just saw the replay and i didn’t see both men on the post live. montero was  ahead of the keeper, but i remembered just one man on the post, not both.

very smart of montero to notice that and run into a dangerous spot.

[...] Seattle Sounders FC struck for two first-half goals and cruised to a 2:0 win over the expansion Philadelphia Union before over 36,000 fans at Qwest Field in their home opener Thursday night. Wind swirled and rain drizzled, keeping the noise level lower in the stands. We were all just trying to stay dry and warm. Meanwhile, the Sounders were trying to keep the vistors at bay and control the wet ball on the Field Turf. • DaveS

yamsmos, look at it a bit more closely ;)

  • yamsmos

what am i missing?  is there a joke going on that i am not understanding…

  • yamsmos

ok, it is 9 beers. got it.

fair to say i am a little slow today.

  • G.G

    yamsmos is still drunk!!! lol

  • LJ

Wow, I guess I was likely at a decent beer number at that point too… even though it happened right in front of us, I didn’t remember the goalie being that far out.  Still think he’s on if you look at his feet though and not his leaning body.

  • greg

what the fuck. there were cucumbers in my prawn sandwich!

The keeper was the one keeping Montero on. I got to say, though, Philadelphia have a potentially good team. Their midfield could really handle possesion. It’s an undersized team, but they are very skillful. They just need some creativity in their midfield and they could be a good team. Their immaturity showed up early, so that led to their downfall, but it was a pretty good start for the new team. Alonso had a great match though. Really held the midfield, went well going forward, and gave us possesion. It was a world class first half and a very professional second half for the Sounders.
