It’s Always Whiny in Philadelphia

Freddie Ljungberg "Diving" (click to enlarge)

Philadelphia Union Head Boss, Peter Nowack had some comments about the Sounders “Flopping and diving” during their 2-0 loss on Thursday Night.

From the other standpoint we got to see all this flopping and diving and when you see the stats we have eight fouls and six cards that is too much. There is guys rolling around on the pitch like they got shot. I think we need to recognize there are guys doing this stuff and trying to take advantage of the referee decisions.

Then he went on to directly discuss Freddie Ljungberg

I expect someone like Freddie Ljungberg who has scored so many goals and played hundreds of games with the national team and won so many trophies would be more honest than he is. He is complaining and whining about missing a goal and trying to push the referee for a yellow card is not up to his standards. I believe and we both played the game and I believe when you play the game you not only try to win but try to be honest with your effort. I think it is below his standards. That is just my opinion…

Is this is the play he’s talking about???

3/27 AM Update: Ljungberg went to the ER following Thursday’s match to get his back checked. He only suffered a bruised bone. On his site, he noted, “The doctor compared the injury with an NFL injury when someone uses their helmet to crash it into someone’s spine.”

    Good find!

  • Alicia

come on. this is how soccer is. everywhere. why not focus on how the union played like a bunch of teenagers instead of men,

  • SoundersGirl

Nowack’s comments are disgraceful. It honestly shows such a lack of class. I went home last night after the match and watched (we always record the matches as well) not only the goals but the take downs.  Our guys took some abuse and still came away with a victory.  Nicely done boys!

  • bud

The HD Big Screen does not lie. Montero was caught redhanded after the first yellow, winking at a teammate while ‘wincing’ in agony.  That was embarrassing and it was for all the world to see.

  • SteveE

That hit on FL was pretty hard when you watch the replay and you watch his face, that is pain.  Plus he left at the 60 minute mark because of his back.  Nowack is a disgrace.  I mean diving happens, but we aren’t diving that bad

  • Joe

“Philadelphia” and “lack of class” have gone hand-in-hand since the dawn of time. No surprises here.

  • Guest

hey ‘bud’ I watched that moment you were talking about (1′) and you are wrong. You could not see him winking at any player. Actually on the broadcast you can’t even see his face when he does look at a teammate. Watch again, I watched it a few times in slow mo too.

  • Joe

Nowak also claimed that our crowd was quiet, proving that he is largely dillusional. He’s in for a rude awakening when he visits the likes of KC, Dallas and SJ.

  • Randall

Freddie flopped so hard he injured his back and asked to be subbed out of the game later on. Now THAT’s a commitment to flopping. If only Moreno had that kind of work ethic maybe Philly would have gotten a different result.

  • DaveS

I think there is a difference between “diving” and staying down an extra few seconds to get a call for a legitimate foul… and I don’t even think FL10 did the latter.

Montero, though, does need to chill out with the overselling of fouls.  There is no way he is legitimately motionless on the ground for 60 seconds, four times a game.  He gets fouled hard and often, he doesn’t need the hyperbole.

Bud, I was wondering if I was the only one who saw that.  I gave him the benefit of the doubt because the shot only showed one eye, scrunched, and he could well have been blinking rain out of his eyes.

  • Laurie

Crap, that “Guest” was me.  My browser cleared my cookies against my will.  Hate when that happens.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt because the shot only showed one eye, scrunched, and he could well have been blinking rain out of his eyes; it was really pouring right about then.

Ehhhh we won who cares….I certainly don’t.

Plus it’s not like we scored on any of those free kicks. The first goal was when Union had 11 players. The second was shortly after Stahl got sent off when Union should have still been very fresh. Even if there were “dives” they are not why we won the game!

  • janizzle

even if montero flopped the first time (the 1 min 1) califf only rly got a yellow so he wasnt pulled out… and FL deff was not flopping this coach is an idiot for thinking so. and i watched the replay of monteros fall and the guys knee did make some serious contact with fredys back. so if any1 is to blame is the moron that is not being careful enough and fouling! he took out both the freddies and got a red thats life and this coach needs to realize his team just isnt as good we would have beaten them anyways since they only had like 2 good shots

  • Anthony

Ljungberg did this all the time in Europe without criticism. Americans look more down on the whole whining and buying for cards.

  • Tim

This same argument is being played out in the EPL. When untalented teams such as Union go against disciplined teams like Seattle (read Stoke City vs Arsenal) all they can do is tackle and foul. The amount of cards the Union received is due to their Rugby-style of Soccer.
This remark is typical Nowak in trying to make an excuse for his inept teams’ poor performance, which translates into his poor ability to put together a solid team. Lets hope Union make advancements before our next meeting so the Sounders don’t have to suffer an Aaron Ramsey incident.

I guess when Nowak watched the game he was watching it with his head inserted into his rectum. Just saying. I was there I saw the replays when we got home and Ljungberg clearly did NOT dive, he was clearly fouled. I am just wondering if this is what Nowak will do every time his team loses. Also Mr. NoWAk how dare you say it was quite, we as a family lost our voices and part of our hearing it was so loud, shame on your sourpuss attitude.

  • Tavo

Hey there, anybody that could please give me some advice on tickets?

I’d like to attend the game against the Red Bulls next Saturday, this will be my first time and I’m taking my girlfriend.

The only tix available right now are CLB239 (Bench side), CLB213 or CHR333.

Which section do you suggest i go for?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Tim

    Tavo,
You should go to QWest Field Website and look at their 3-D Seat View for Sounders FC to see each section.  That will give you an idea of the best location (if that is what you are going for).  Enjoy the match!
    Cheers

  • Mark

Bud, please… no more commenting.  You never have anything constructive or remotely accurate to say.

  • Mark

Very classless comment by a coach.  Take a lesson from Sigi and learn to keep your mouth shut Nowacko.  Your team played too physical and they got punished.

  • MIKE

JDW, I am changing the title of this thread b/c of you.

  • laurie

Tavo, are the CHR333 seats the loge seats, and close to midline?  I sat in the loge seats for the DCU-Real Madrid game in ’06 and thought they were great.

  • jt

If this is how the Union want to play, give us back Le Toux.  He’s too good to be wasted on those thugs.  Go get guys like Mcgee and Wiebel – they’re more your style!

  • Tavo

    Thank you both!

Laurie, not sure if they are the loge steats, they are at mid-point from the midline and endline (not sure if south or north)

    Here is the tix info:

    Section: CHR333
    Row: D
    Seats: 19-18
    Description: PRICE LEVEL 3
300 LEVEL ALL INCLUSIVE SEATING W/ FOOD & NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS
SEATING LOCATED IN OR NEAR ENDZONE
    SEAT WITH BACK AND ARMREST
    FULL VIEW SEATING
ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED IN THIS SECTION

I think the view will be pretty good up there, not too sure about the atmosphere thought.

  • yamsmos

tavo… they ARE the loge seats… having never sat there, i can’t comment on if you would like them. but the atmosphere is surely not what you would get in some other areas. so depends on what you want. better atmosphere? or the good view of the game.

  • Tavo

Yamsoms, we’d prefer to be in a section where we can stand and jump the entire game and hear non-stop chants from the crazy fans!
But also wouldn’t mind to have a good view, not perfect, just descent you know….thanks!

  • yamsmos

well i don’t think you are going to get that from the loge seats… but i am only speculating here, i have never sat there. also, not sure what to expect from the club seats either. others could comment better than me on that.

  • Tom Paine

Nowack should spit those grapes out if they’re so sour.
