My Complaints About MLSsoccer.com

mlssoccerIn case you didn’t notice, the new website for MLS has moved from MLSnet.com to MLSsoccer.com. We’re not going to comment on the redundancy of the URL, but on the functionality on the site.

First off, Match Day Live is awesome. HD Quality is great and better than CBS’s March Madness on Demand. The ability to watch multiple matches is a bit overkill, but a nice feature nonetheless.

But to the drawbacks…

  1. Where are the scores? Go to NBA.com or NHL.com and what do you see across the top of their sites? SCORES of the most recent games (plus the pending schedule for the next games). MLSsoccer.com has this set up with their banner listing the matches, but alas, no scores.
  2. Update the damn site. It’s 3 days after the Sounders vs. Union match and the MLSsoccer.com/schedule shows the match as <blank>-<blank> score with an attendance of 0.
  3. The schedule notes that 4 of yesterday’s matches are set for today (Sunday). For what it’s worth, they have all the weeks’ scheduled messed up (HOU vs. RSL & LA v. CHV are on Thursday 4/1, but they’re noted for Friday 4/2 on MLSsoccer.com). Plus, would it be hard to have TV listings there?
  4. I will admit that I was surprised to see that the current standings are correct. But, the stats are still showing 2009 data.
  5. I miss the ability of clicking directly to a club’s website from the mini-icons across the header.

Alright, all in all, this site is about Design and not Data, Flash over Content. Hopefully this is just a work in progress so MLS had SOMETHING new to release for First Kick. In my opinion, it’s better to release something great a bit late than meeting a deadline with a sub-par product.

What about you? Did I miss any glaring functional miscues? Is there anything new that you like?

They went not able to sign any of the new up and coming talent, they went to design sites in Europe. Thay had to sign designers at the end of their career that could not get contracts in Europe.

My complaint is MLS on FSN lack of knowledge of the league and results. On the Post-Match of the Galaxy v NE match they showed a standings graphic indicating Sounders had lost the first week of player – then – instead of correcting it verbally (that is if they actually knew) the commentators wondered if Sounders would turn it around against NY. Pathetic.
I have read alot of articles lately bitching that ESPN, etc use Brits in the broadcast booth and color commentary. They complain that it seems like American Soccer broadcasters need their “hands held” through a match – well, they do.

  • Randle

Mobile function is still ‘coming soon’.

For those of who spend a large amount of time away from a real terminal, this is a deal breaker.

I got better coverage on the ScoreCenter app I use (bout the only place ESPN still covers the MLS) and more recent updates on yahoo.

Work in progress?! Bah. Even gosounders.com has an iPhone view for users. (thanks for that btw)

I’ll be honest.  I LIKE not seeing the scores.  It provides an opportunity to watch matches on demand without having the result spoiled for you.  To be fair, I haven’t fully explored the new site or the new Match Day Live setup, but it seems they’re using the exact format used by the NHL.  I rather like that.  Multiple matches is good as well, though it would be much more useful if one could watch the four way split full screen.  Oh well.  Credit to MLS for moving things forward.  Word is spreading around the world about how the league is improving.  Let’s hope MLS can keep it up.

The life of an mls fan is quite frustrating. No respect on any media outlet, so we at least need a great website. While mlsnet was’nt the greatest i knew what to excpect this year. All i wanted was to play a fantasy league!! Then the new site came, while it looks better, it sucks on all counts! i noticed all your points, but what really gets me is no match center, no fantasy league. It’s a sad day indeed for mlssoccer!?!

  • bakwordz

Almost forgot… u dont even want to try to look up players! Site dosent even hve stats from last year if you look up alonso, u get his bio with a picture of Zach Scott.lol

  • Nick Jacob

I honestly would have rather had them stay with the old one until they got this one ready for launch. It’s only 70% done for cryin’ out loud.

  • jt

It also has the schedule in GMT times – so the last game before the World Cup is at 3am on June 11th!!!

At least leave in the generic text until you have it right!

Sure, they missed out on some obvious no-brainers:

    - Scores on the home page
    - Embedding a highlight video into the match recaps (instead of following a link)
    - Matchcenter Beta: there are icons for substitutions, and cards, but no icons for goals scored next to a player

But for me, the site is worlds better than mlsnet.com in a number of ways:

    - Aesthetic: it’s a cleaner, crisper, clunk-free design
    - Main News Items: migrating away from flash video headlines makes the site load twice as fast as the old one and makes it less of a pain to choose the story you want
    - Highlights: The new HD highlights make watching way more awesome
    - Matchcenter Beta: despite its shortcomings, the matchcenter does do some things right – twitter integration is a fun way to find other fans talking about your club – and again, the matchcenter is way less clunky and loads faster than the old VW matchcenter from last year.

Digging in more, I can’t see the cards or the MLS Disciplinary Committee bits.  Not even the info from last year.  This still looks like a half cooked beta!

  • Mark

FYI, they do have scores at the top of the all pages, including the future game schedule and times.  Maybe they recently added this?

However, I don’t see the Seattle vs. Whiny score.

  • Brian

I KNOW WHERE THE SCORES ARE.

I had the same issue with the scores.  They hide the scores from you in case you missed the game and wanted to come back later to watch them.  There is a little button on top that will turn the scores on for you.  But that has a glitch.  The score from the Earlier Columbus/Toronto game dissapeared around 6 last night and never came back.

I also don’t like how the price for matchday has gone up to $40 when it was $20 last year.  But I now get the videos in HD and the Quality is better than the HD I get on my TV at home.

Hey I just looked at the website again and there is another glitch in the scores it says every game was a 0-0 tie

My complaints… lots of things that add up to make the site feel cheap, unprofessional, and basically just annoying as hell…

    1) I signed up for the Matchday, but funny thing… there is no way that I can see to navigate to Match Day Live from the front page!!!.  At one point, of of the “stories” on the bottom (horizontal strip with images and captions) was was a link to match day signup.  I was going through that, then clicking on the “Already signed up? Click here..” link on top of the signup form.  Now its gone, and there is seriously no way that I see to navigate to it… EVEN UNDER THE “VIDEOS” NAV MENU!!!  Luckily, I had the signup email that points me to mdl.mlssoccer.com. Amateurs.

    2) MatchDay Live UI has frustrating issues: When I first used it, I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of the annotated timeline on the bottom… even if I hadn’t watched the game, I couldn’t avoid knowing that a goal or a card was coming up as the time approached the little circle marker.  Now, I can’t figure out how to get the things to show up for when I want to skip to a goal.  It is a useful feature, but you should be able to toggle it on or off.

    3) Inconsistent/incoherent site design:  As I mentioned above, there used to be a link to matchday live where the “DVB to return to NY?” story is at this particular moment.  Since the spot that was previously a link to MDL is now a news story, I don’t think I could explain to someone what those “stories” at the bottom are.  There is no coherent, defining “rule” about what goes there, apparently.

Also, the “Slideshow” at top of home doesn’t give any indication that you are clicking through to a video. Also, clicking on the image for the article should send you to the content, but MLSSoccer.com requires you to click on the title of the article… it does NOT, however, give you any indication beyond the cursor that this is the place to click.  So you have to “feel around” the page to figure out what the UI elements do, if anything.

  • DaveS

    Also, there is:

    1) A scrolling slideshow
    2) A horizontal list of headlines with images and captions for stories on bottom
    3) A right-aligned box with “TOP NEWS”.

So which is REALLY the “top news”?  A reader is given completely contradictory impressions about what they should read if they are just dropping in to find the big news of the day… they then give up and go to soccernet.espn.go.com

  • yamsmos

i have to agree that i do like the lack of scores on the home page as well b/c if you are going there to watch a game for the first time, that would be infuriating. hjowever, when i just went to majorleaguesoccersoccer.com the scores showed up, so maybe they are still figuring all of this functionality out. but i vote no scores with a very simple and obvious “show scores” button or something.

  • Brian

    >> At one point, of of the “stories” on the bottom

The ML Soccer Soccer studder spreads!

  • Brian

I just remembered another bug in the MLS live feature.  In the chat it censors too many words.  I understanding George’s 7 dirty words, but it censors double meaning words like prick and suck.  It didn’t take long for us to find a way around the censor, we could either add a space in the word or capitalize one of the letters.

  • Steve

Yeah I gotta say the table not on the main page bugs me.  I really liked that.  What happened to Goal Differential too?  That used to be there, now it is W-L-T-P.  I like the old logos/quick links up top too and not the drop down that happens.  Overall I like the site as it looks a lot better and seems like it will run better on phones (and I agree, the mobile coming soon is crap), but they need to make some tweaks to it.
