Sounders Head Coach Sigi Schmid was trying to make a message by not starting Fredy Montero in Saturday’s match at New York. The Colombian came on as a sub in the 78th minute.

7 minutes later he scored the match’s lone goal giving Sounders FC (3-3-3, 12pts) their first road win of the 2010 campaign. Montero’s 3rd goal of the season started when Patrick Ianni (who was making the start for injured Ozzie Alonso) got fouled. Tyrone Marshall’s quick restart on the Red Bulls’ side of the half led Brad Evans’ who placed a magnificent cross to Montero in the 18. In a skillful play, #17 chested the ball down to his left thigh and then left-footed the ball past Bouna Condoul.

In holding the East Coast leaders scoreless, the Sounders defense anchored by Kasey Keller in goal posted its third clean sheet of the year.

The Sounders will host San Jose next Saturday at Qwest Field. [Tickets]
