the rumors are flying… send me an angel?

Posted by yamsmos on July 13, 2010 · Under Commentary · View Comments

it is hard to know how much truth lies in each blog post/twitter rumor/im that i receive, and there isn’t a great way to know… so for now, we will just agree that they lie somewhere between 0% and 100% true.

this thursday, the only thing we know will happen, is that something will definitely happen.  the latest, a la the ecs, is that ljunberg for new yorks angel is on the table. in fact, they say it quite matter of factly “We just heard that it’s going to be Ljungberg for Juan Pablo Angel…”

just for S and G’s, what should we think of this? well, it makes sense actually. freddie isn’t happy, he isn’t playing well, the coach is getting a little irritated with him… and maybe the most important piece of the puzzle is there is only 4 months left on his contract.  the sounders have a lot of young midfield talent that has been showing its worth of late, so while i wouldn’t go as far as to say that freddie is expendable, you can say that his position is already back filled.

angel, as best i can tell, is under contract through 2011 and likely has a similar salary (although i couldn’t find it at this late hour). even though we have a harder working montero, nkufo just about to join and jaqua just off injury, adding angel could really make a lot of sense. while he hasn’t found his goal scoring boots of a few years ago… he is still a much bigger threat to score than freddie, and strikers, fighting for position, is always a good thing. it is something we really haven’t had before.

give a player confidence that he has his job every single week (montero), and well, sometimes it just takes the edge off of him. i don’t want to suggest that montero is absolutely slacking off, if even a little, but it is human nature to put in just enough work, and sometimes not any more…  most of us do it to some degree.

so while angel wouldn’t be my top choice, in this scenario, it makes a lot of sense.

thursday will be fun…

  • Alex y

I hope this is true FL doesn’t want to be in Seattle and angel is still scoring goals

  • Gee

I would take Angel in a heartbeat! i still think he is one of the best players in the MLS and i feel like we play better without freddie.

  • murmur000

actually, one of the points of conflict is that freddie wants to negotiate a contract extension now while the front office wants to wait until the end of the season—which is to say, they don’t have plans on keeping him beyond the end of the year.

that being said, i’d be happy with an angel-for-ljungberg trade. angel may not be what he was, but what he is currently is second in goals scored this year! ljungberg is a very good player but a lot of his production can be replaced by montano. meanwhile, for all the things ljungberg has done, he’s shown that he can’t elevate the team when they’re struggling. add to that the fact that he’s very hard on his teammates and i think the sounders would be better with angel. i’d even be happy with a ljungberg-for-lindpere-and-kandji trade!

  • DaveS

Yeah, I like FL10 but I think this would be a good move for everyone involved.

I could actually really dig the columbian trio of Angel, Montero, Montano. I think there could be some real chemistry there and a lot of goals!

  • Tdub

Its not FL10 fault that we are a team thats filled with people who can’t finish…  His service, not including corners, and vision on the field are top notch I say keep him until we can see what he can do with Kufo up top.  Freddies biggest problem is that other players in the mls can’t keep up with him in the skill department, so they resort to hack a shaq tactics until the refs stop giving him the benefit of the doubt and allow them to jump all over him

  • bud

    Old for old?  Meh.

  • bud

One positive:  JPA prolly wouldn’t mind all the CCL travel.

I could never really see FL10 riding a bus on a shitty road 3 hours to Metapan to play in the rai.

  • Steve

From what I have seen he makes 1.5 base and has a “multi-year” deal as of last year.  Can’t say if it is 2 and I can’t say it is 5, but that is as far as I have seen.

To me this says Montero is gone.  This is his replacement.  I see him being really good for Montano helping him progress and bond (as I hear Montero hates him).  The question then becomes “Are we going after a 3rd DP and what position?”  I would think we would be trying to get someone to replace FL or go in an CAM.

Tomorrow should be VERY interesting and maybe a bit fun.  We were asking for a blow up, this could be it.  Get rid of two of our issues, two of our divas and watch the team gel together.

  • Steve
  • RWDJr37

I totally agree.  If this rumor turns out to be true, I don’t see how this isn’t writing on the wall for Montero.

The other thing this shows is the ownership group’s willingness to make SERIOUS changes in an attempt to turn this thing around soon.  I like it and would definitely appreciate it as a supporter and season ticket holder.

  • Gee

    the three amigos?

  • pbr206

I like the idea of having depth and height in the forward position, Jaqua Nkufo and Angel are all over the 6 foot mark, but I thught what we needed was more depth in the midfield, how does getting rid of ljungberg help us in the midfield dept.? evans is out, alonso is out, fucito is out, Seamon is young and i cant really get a good read on his form.

  • Steve

Seems like we would get rid of Montero and we would have to clear up more cap room like a Noonan, Jaqua, Vagenas (or two or all three) to get enough room for a third DP.  I think if we don’t get Angel and Montero isn’t gone, we need a CAM.  Sturgis/Seaman just don’t cut it.  I am fine with Montano for FL, he will grow and get better, but we need a vet that can push to go along with Ozzie who can stay back for d

  • Barry Woslum

I agree totally.  even though I like FL and think he’s still playing fantastic without any help (watch him with Nkufo and Alonso back), I would be okay with sending him overseas (how is sending him to an MLS team a good thing? and why would we have had to wait til the 15th?)

  • Barry Woslum

agree with murmur. How does wanting to renegotiate your contract to stay longer equal not wanting to be here?

  • Ben

Now that NYRB have Henry, if they get Ljungberg as well that is a bit scary. They certainly don’t need Angel anymore.

I’m afraid of us getting rid of both Montero and Ljungberg. I think we would have to have hired a new CAM in that case

  • The Truth

You guys are amazing.I have close contacts in the league. The offer is Mac Kandgi & Dane Richards & 600K inallocation money for Freddie. Seattle has agreed in principle. The only hold up is that if RBNY signs Rafa Marquez, the deal is off.

Angelis not part of it. He’ll be partnering with Henry.

  • Dizzo_Dizzman

I don’t know if the Truth has the truth, but I like the deal.  Mac Kandji and Dane Richards are too good young prospects and Dane fill immediate need for Seattle.  Dane can fill the open spot at Right Wing.

Kandji could be a very good target forward and we could use him to increase our height up top in CCL and Open Cup games.  He would also be a great sub to keep both Jaqua and Nkufo fresh during MLS games.

It still leaves a gaping hole for the Sounders in the CAM spot.  I’m hoping that Seamon can step up big time to fill that spot for us.  More realistically, the $600,000 in allocation money would go a long way to signing a quality DP for the CAM spot.

Probably next season as this one is shot to hell.

  • Sky of Blue

Not sure if you saw this but it might be that we get Angel in order to transfer him for a winger from Argentina:

  • Truth

Does Angel sound like he’s leaving?

    http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/teams/redbulls2.php?article_id=24308

Wake up & smell your much vanuted coffee.

  • Alicia

I would be so upset if Freddie was gone. He may not score but look at what he DOES. He always seems on the ball, yes sometimes he stands there waiting, but compared to other ‘star’ players *COUGHMONTEROCOUGH* he’s always running around. He may be old-er, but he’s in top freaking form.

Mid’s shouldn’t have to score, they set it up for forwards. I enjoy watching FL work the field. I would be SO upset!!

JPA honestly isn’t as much fun to watch as FL. I wish we’d work more on making our team work then adding players when we’re not quite ready for it..

  • MIKE

NYRB fans think we’re grasping at straws on this one…

  • Truth

That’s because you are grasping at straws.

  • Dizzo_Dizzman

I don’t think Angel is leaving.  I looked at that article Sky of Blue posted.  Matias Abelairas is the winger mentioned.  According to Wikipedia, he’s been released by River Plate so we wouldn’t need to trade for him.  I can’t find much else.

I like the new rumor being posted around much better :)    That one has Ljundberg going to RBNY for Kandji, Dane Richards & $600,000 in allocation money.

Our real need, especially if Ljundberg leaves, is a CAM and a good Right Winger.  The $600,000 goes a long way to signing a second DP as a CAM.  Dane Richards can fill in as Right Winger.  As a bonus we get a talented, young target forward with lots of upside.

  • Steve

So someone can’t hide the truth by playing ball with management and acting like nothing is going on?  You claim to be a writer from NY, but sorry, you don’t have any cred out here.

It is fun to speculate on either rumor, but all of this does no good except pass time until something happens

  • Ben

The other trade for Kandji and Dane would be weird too because we’re overflowing with roster spots as it is. How could we do a 2-1 trade?

  • Truth

    You would sell Montero.

Freddie & Monetro out. Dane & Big Mac in.

Geez – this isn’t really that  complicatd.

  • Mark

I think if The Truth actually knew anything he/she wouldn’t be posting it on the gosounders blog.  No offense.  The Truth’s statement seems to be all smoke and mirrors.

  • Mark

The Truth needs to stop telling lies…

  • cl

I really like Ljundberg as a Sounder, but I agree with those that think he hasn’t been fitting in with the team that well.  i would be okay with him leaving if we pick up enough to make it worth our loss.

I don’t agree with a straight-up trade with Angel, unless we’re getting rid of Montero as well and that would then get too complicated with how much money that would free up and who we’d go after.

Richards would be an immediate boost, but a small one over Montano and Nyassi and not an area where I think we need the most help.  Kanji would be a good fit as a true forward to work with either Jaqua / Montero / N’Kufo.  It would give us some serious depth and probably free up a bunch of salary room as well.  At that point we’d actually have 0 DPs (unless N’Kufo has been officially deemed one), which I didn’t think he was as of yet.

So get rid of Ljundberg, get Richards, Kanji and hopefully enough allocation money to get at least 2 more DPs maybe 3…would that be possible?  If so, hell yes!  I appreciate all you’ve done Ljundberg but you’ve got to go if this is possible.

Then bring in a stud midfielder (with Alonso coming back and Seamon we’ll be okay with just one), a stud central defender (I love Hurtado but he’s done this year and Parke will probably be leaving soon, Marshall should retire) and stud wing back!

    I’m starting to drool!

  • Truth

I realize that most seattle fans newbies, but common sense:

    1) RBNY signed Henry to play alongside JPA
    2) JPA is signed through NEXT YEAR
    3) JPA is the team captain
    4) ljungberg is not well-liked & is off on a free in NOV
    5) No way RBNY trades JPA for a player whose gone at year’s end & is injury prone
    6) JPA only wanted to go back to South America because he hated playing on turf. Why would he play on in Seattle?

    Common sense, please.

    To further illustrate..from MLS’ web-site:

“MONTCLAIR, N.J. — All season long, New York Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe has been lamenting the fact that he lacks a striker with pace. In his first year with the club, Backe has said repeatedly that he envisions former Colombian international Juan Pablo Angel as a “box-player”—someone who is most effective inside the penalty area. Many times this year, Angel has been forced to drop back into the midfield to receive the ball.
Well, sometimes you get what you want.

With the news of Thierry Henry’s signing, Backe now has a player who can partner up top with Angel and provide potentially the most dynamic one-two punch in league history. “

I keep waiting for ‘Lies’ and ‘Video Tape’ to leave posts about this rumor factory we have.

Does make it more exciting than last year’s transfer window though.

  • Randle

This rumor factory we have goin sure is more fun than last year’s transfer window.

  • yamsmos

truth… it is rumor talk, not fact. the whole post said so much. the chances of this trade is small, but it is speculation fun. join or don’t but you don’t need come in critiquing us talking about possibilities.

    let your hair down

  • MIKE

So nice you said it thrice?

  • bud

I think some people are in denial.

  • Michael Deal

How many of FL10′s corners have we scored on this year or ever?

  • Truth

Just wanted to illustrate how ridiculous this whole JPA Rumor is.

  • seanfenn

Any more rumors today?  It is kind of fun to make gueses/dream.
Truth sure is a stupid name – kind of arrogant don’t you think?
Maybe FL really is just injured and the Sounders F.O. is looking in other directions (not NY directions)…

  • RWDJr37

    Well…*sigh*

This whole ordeal has become a bit anticlimatic today.  Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but I thought FL10 would be gone by now.

  • bud

No, they’ll stagger the news items for max PR.  Day One: Kufo.  Day Two:  Post-game.  Day Three: Celtic.  Day Four: FL.   Etc.

  • pbr206

hey on the bright side, at least we arent picking up a DP like Henry just to fill empty seats…

we are picking up a DP that can find the back of the net…

wait maybe that isnt as bright as I first thought.
