Sounders Down DC, 1-0

Posted by Mike on July 15, 2010 · Under DC United, Results · View Comments

Many Sounders fans were excited today with the hopes of seeing Blaise Nkufo for the first time in Rave Green. In the waning minutes of regulation their spirits were crushed when Sigi Schmid used Seattle’s third substitute with Sanna Nyassi.

However, 1 minute later, Roger Levesque energized Sounders fans across the coast when he headed home the game’s lone goal at the 89th minute off a beautiful cross from Fredy Montero.

The win is Seattle’s first in the last 5 league matches, and second in the last 8. It also improves the Sounders record to 5-8-4 (19 pts).

Kasey Keller, put in a heroic effort in goal saving a number of dangerous DC United opportunities; a few of them after he suffered a mid-foot sprain on a challenge on Andy Najar in the 65th minute.

Quick Notes: Nate Jaqua was a late scratch due to a “Groin Strain”. Jeff Parke was substituted for due to Abdominal Cramps.

That game was very enjoyable to watch. My jaw hit the floor when the camera actaully caught Montero putting in effort. Alonso is easily one of the best midfielders in the league. Every game that Sanna plays, he gets better and better. :-D

Montero was great today I don’t care what anyone says he played like he was on a 5 star team

  • peterson

i cant wait until sunday to see Nkufo play if it meant that we got a win with Sanna in the last couple of minutes than so be it!!!!!!!!!

    GOOD JOB BOYS!!!

DCU’s fans have no class.  We would never boo a player who was so obviously ACTUALLY HURT.

  • Ken

Don’t kid yourself — we would, and we have.

  • DaveS

When have we done that?  We’ve boo’d people who got knocked up a bit and who were probably in some temporary pain, but we’ve never boo’d a guy who was limping around the field, having other people take his free kicks for him, and throwing the ball to avoid having to kick it.  The people we have boo’d were ostensibly time wasting.  Keller was very very clearly injured.

You’ve obviously never listened to the words in the “Take them all” chant by ECS.

How much credit should we give last night’s win to it being DC and FL being out?

  • Gee

or the classless chant of “Studs up Sounders”

  • Barry Woslum

I think all the credit shoud go to Keller for being and impregnable fortress.
Several times, the defense just let DC shoot. on the other end, when we had the ball in range of the goal, their defense was right on us.
I saw pretty poor midfield play, and no real possesion. I like Sturgis as a stop gap, but still think Evans is a better CAM. Can’t wait for Alonso to be 100%.

  • Steve

Okay, I guess I should say outside Keller.  Keller was the man to say the least especially since he was hurt!

  • DaveS

Again, we yell “Let him die”, chant “Studs up Sounders” and sing “Take ‘em all”, all of which are completely incomparable to continuing to boo a guy for the duration of the game–as though he was just playing games to waste time–when he is clearly actually in pain.  We do that when someone makes a miraculous recovery after ostensibly wasting time, or if its someone that we just don’t generally like.

  • Gee

Maybe Keller is someone they just don’t like.

  • laurie

George John, Dallas, last game last year, bad sprain if I remember correctly.  He got booed for time-wasting.

  • MIKE

And George John is a UW guy too.

  • Randle

Relatively tame compared to some chants or mockery around the world.

  • DaveS

    LOL fair enough.

  • Paul Conner

As we sang the other night, ‘Kasey Keller is the pussy of the year, the pussy of the year, the pussy of the year.’
