fun game to watch… ref decided to f it up

first of all. to all you referee apologists out there… yes i know the rules. yes i know that boss took down sam-i-am-an-ass. yes, by thebook he was last man. so yes a red card was, by the book warranted… but there is this other part of the game where the referee has some subjective interpretation of the game. ref’s and their bosses talk about it all the time. they have to consider the gravity of the game, the people playing and call the game accordingly.

so here we have celtic, on a preseason tour, with pretty much the only goal of getting in shape against some half way decent opposition. and on the other hand you have the sounders and their fans, enjoying a sunday out with their family and friends against an international opponent.

so sam-i-am-an-ass was taken down in the box, but he still managed to score…. what do you do???

well for me, you play advantage, score the goal, and give boss a yellow for his foul. instead, the ref decided to not pay attention to anything that the game stood for and gave the red to boss and the penalty. whether or not you are buying my argument for keeping boss on the pitch or not, you have to agree, advantage should have been played, and the goal given. in such a case… then the last man should not be given a yellow.

ok, my point is made. the ref f’d it up IMO and the game must go on. the straight haired one scored the pk and the hoops went into the half up 1-0.

after the half, some neanderthal of a man (and seriously, i am not meaning that badly… he was just a hulk) went tearing down the left wing, put in a great cross and a very simple pass into the net saw celtic 2-0 up. it was deserved to be fair.

but then estrada came on and supplied the moment of the match for the sounders. after a bit of a defensive error, he found some space, listened to me yelling “shoot”, and cranked it into the top of the net. you could argue the keeper should have had it, and he should, but frankly, the ball was drilled and the keeper was nothing but shocked to see it coming his way. estrada ALMOST tied it up, but it bounced off the post about 10 minutes later… but it ended 2-1.

the sounders lost, but the game was fun to watch.

a few more random thoughts.

- nkufo gave us something to drool over. he didn’t have too many opportunities, but you could see his thoughts, and his skill… and frankly, mls defenders are not quite as good as those huge celtic defenders of today.

- sorry montero, you got sacrificed. you didn’t deserve to come of so soon, but so goes the protocol when your keeper gets red carded.

- alonso was massive again. time to sign him up for a 32 year contract… or at least the 4 year max.

- nyassi is really showing his maturity. his skill hasn’t changed at all. it is his confidence that is blossoming massively. have he and zakuani EVER been on the pitch at the same time? what is sigi afraid off? too much speed on the wings?

all in all, a fun game to attend. i didn’t get to enjoy all the nuances that the game gave us b/c i had a 4 year old climbing on me, but it was good footy and i am sure the players loved running out against a world renowned team.

also, let’s be glad these celtic savages didn’t sacrifice our young and try to burn all the virgins at the stake. i mean i heard all the stories, so it seems like they behaved themselves all in all.

A little rough on Samaras there, aren’t we?

I haven’t heard anyone mention that fact that the Samaras breakaway which resulted in that debacle was the result of a no-call on a blatant foul on Montano (I think it was Montano, anyways).

  • yamsmos

oh… not trying to be rough.

see… i am a 6th grader at heart. and i like making fun of names.

and samaras, has always been known to me as sam i am an ass ever since his citeh days.

so am i a little immature? absolutely. but i don’t know him from adam and i am sure he isn’t an ass, well not sure, but i will give him the benefit of the doubt.

however, he still has the straightest hair ever known to man kind.

  • Alex y

This could of been a whole differnet game if It was 11on11 just saying maybe we could of won but you kno the refs make bad calls when it matters and now they call a pk in a friendly

  • Randle

Sitting at the north end I had ample opportunity to drool over the potential Nkufo brings.

The Celtic fan I drove down to Kent to pick up, had a great time, laughed at ECS antics, reminisced about the good old days in Glasgow, bought a round of Guiness for us and enjoyed the match.

Excepting the loss, an afternoon well spent.

  • rv

well with that in mind yasmos i will say well done, well done.

his hair almost reminded me of levesque last year, chi-mo vibe and all.

Scott and Graham couldn’t handle Samaras even if they were double teaming him……

And also the sounders have been getting a lot of practice playing 10 v 11 hope to see 11 players for a whole game more often.

Just another reason not to play midseason firendlies.

    Vagenas was crap, again.

    Luckily no one got hurt.

FL10 was not even mentioned during the ESPN broadcast.  It’s like he’s already been erased from FO memory.

  • bud

Oh yeah, that Estrada kid must have been praying really really long, because his cure was miraculous, taking him from so hurt to be placed on the IR to flying around for 40 mins in less than a week.

The only thing more amazing than that would be if the Sounders didn’t get fined for misuse of the league’s IR rules.

The kid was never hurt.  Ditto FL10.

  • overmars

ir rules only affect MLS, MLS roster rules have little impact on the USOC and the CCL

  • overmars

no to mention what amounted to a reserve match friendly, where our coaches could have played, Ezra and Henderson have been known to play in a few.

  • LJ

Why is it I can’t control getting all pissy when I see Vagenas out on the pitch?  I realize it may be a personal problem for me as he can’t really be as bad as I have made him out to be in my mind… but ugh.  Suppose I’d rather see him out there for a friendly than a real game though…

  • RWDJr37

All the above Blaise-based comments say it all and more…I’m trying really hard not to put the “savior” label on him.  One guy can only do so much…but demanding the ball from his teammates in certain positions is something we have missed from the beginning of our MLS franchise.  Loved seeing that.

  • Barry Woslum

I have the same response! I want to boo him like D.C. to Keller….I can’t explain it. he can’t be that bad.

  • Steve

I wouldn’t mind him so much if he didn’t make 158k last year and 117k this year.  Too much money for crap.  Time to trim the fat like this.

  • Randle

Agreed. All my drooling assumes that he gels with the rest of team, gets the passes/crosses, and opportunities to clean up deflections and such.

Great to see motivation from him, montano, even Estrada at the end.

Oh, and general question, could Jennings be signed under the ‘home-grown’ part of the CBA, and would it cost us cap space?

  • bud

The kid was put on the IR due to injury.  And then he plays a week later.

    Thin-slice it all you want.

It’s a blatant misuse of the intent of the IR.  Not to mention it is a lie, which this franchise seems really adept at doing.

  • Mark

Sigi has only had Nyassi and Zakuani on the field at the same time once that I know of; that was last week at the DC game.

I think Sigi is concerned about what could happen if they collide on the field.  Some theorize that the result of their collision could give us the first glimpse of the “God particle”.  While others are concerned the collision would create a short-lived black hole that would swallow up some of the nearby players.

With such great power one must be careful.

  • John Mercado

Mark: I think Sigi is more worried about parity as the MLS is. With both, It might be unfair to other teams.

Kufo will be fun to watch in as he gels with the team, and I had hoped to see him and FL on the pitch togeather, but…. oh well

Bud: Estrada has a condition that would affect his foot in league play only. You are not a doctor are you?  The fact that his condition will help us out as far as depth from our team bench in Concacaf play does not imply that it is a made up injury. I think I have seen him on crutchs, and MLS expantion teams should know he has some cronic conditions, so let us keep him.

  • Jeromy

I don’t see the problem with that, take a look at the NBA use of the IR, baseball as well, most American sports use the IR for roster shifting, nothing new, nothing to complain about.

  • Paul Wacker

These are mine and pretty much the thoughts of over 40,000 who watched this game. On the down side, Montano, Scott and Vagenus didn’t have as great of games as they have had in the past, each with multiple errors on the day. The overall team play was good considering the condition of playing a man down for 60 minutes.

  • bud

I’m old enough to remember when lying was wrong.  Stupid me.

  • Jeromy

pretty sad to be talking about IR abuse when he have so many other problems and topics to talk about.

  • Steve

I mainly wanted to see just 1 game with Nkufo and FL, but after Mayer’s latest blog, we wont see that.  That is too bad.  Maybe for the better as it is better none, then 1 and get your hopes up

  • pbr206

    dont tempt him…
