Alvaro Fernandez against Chile

World Soccer Reader is suggesting that Sounders FC is looking to obtain 24-year old midfielder Alvaro Fernandez (based on this report and this one).

Fernandez currently is under contract with Nacional in Uruguay and has 8 caps for the Uruguayan National Team.

He is described on the FIFA website as…

A speedy, right-sided attacking midfielder, Alvaro Fernandez is a player of many gifts. A direct runner from midfield, the incisive Uruguayan is capable of reaching the by-line and supplying his strikers with precise crosses. Alternatively, he is just as adept at cutting in from in the flank and going for goal himself.

During the World Cup, Fernandez appeared in 4 of Uruguay’s matches where he recorded a shot and committed two fouls (while suffering 3).

wait, an attacking mid who is quality enough to play in the WC?  Coming our way?  About time we got a good rumor coming our way.  Another rumor I saw on MLSR (so take it with a grain of salt) is FL is in London.

    Thanks

Hope its true. Also good riddence to FL.

    Youth and talent wow

  • Ken

I’m very excited if this is true.  This must be who Hanauer was scouting on his WC trip.

  • DaveS

Yes, please.  Also, we paid a $50k transfer fee (if rumor is correct).  That doesn’t sound like DP money.  He may be the first of 2 incoming players… maybe?

the intro music to the video was intense. I think this might be promising.

I love how it’s already posted on Alvaro’s Wikipedia page as him having transfered a/o today’s date, w/ the source being Joshua’s speculative post on the Times’ site. Gotta love today’s circular media.

If we get him then we can drop Noonan!

Cutting noonan will not open cap space noonan would have to agree that to terminate the contract and that seattle would be off the hook

If you look on the fifa world cup site you see that he had limited playing time in the WC.

  • DaveS

I think we already all know that.  You think we could sign a regular starter and veteren–in his mid-20s–for a side that finished 4th in the World Cup?  No way… we would be doing good to get a guy who started one match and played in 3 others for the 4th place side.

  • Mark

Which is still a much better resume that any of our current players.

  • dundasfc

I would hope that, as we look at new blood coming in, we would look at them as players still developing.  We heard a lot about a WC signing but I would hope the expectations are within reason.  If Fernandez came into the fold, I would expect a quality player but he would be one still making a career for himself.  He would still have a ways to go.  I would think he would be a good signing. I would imagine him being on the same page as Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.

I guess Steve Z. and Kufo will have to learn to speak spanish to understand what all their team mates are saying… si quieren la bola!

You can say Uruguay was overrated in the WC (they were) but they were at least as good as the USMNT.  We both played Ghana basically evenly.  They went further in the tournament.  Etc.

So, would you not happily take someone from the USMNT who played in a limited capacity, say a Stuart Holden (4 min.) or Francisco Torres (46 minutes)?

    I would.  In a heartbeat.
