sounders win at home… about freaking time

Posted by yamsmos on July 25, 2010 · Under Colorado Rapids, Commentary · View Comments

i am up way early on my way to NYC tomorrow so i have to keep this on short tip.

sounders played their ass off, and there is no fault for effort anywhere on this team. it was the full 90 and even though i was ready to have a hear attack in the last ten minutes… as i was not ready to watch another game gifted away… credit to the boys who did the job that we were so used to last year.

i didn’t get to see replays of either zakuani’s goals… the first seemed a little sloppy (no complaints) and the second a result of a nice johnny legendriley cross. or do i have those mixed up. either way… both were a result of player taking his chances by being in the righ place at the right time.  and let’s be honest… most of your goals should come from that. you can’t rely on crazy skill and wicked shooting for most goals, or you will lose more than you win. you should rely on people taking their chances and that is what he did.

some thoughts on the overall performance… and then i am off to bed.

- montero. i count this as the third game in a row where you didn’t sit on your ass and you ran it off instead. keep up the good work. if not for the sounders, or their fans, do it for yourself and your desired european move b/c you won’t get one unless you show that effort week in week out.

- nkufo. don’t shoot me… but he is still a little lost. and i don’t blame him. he is still figuring out what his teammates like/do and where they like to run/pass. i hold nothing against him. there is a lot to settle into in a new team/city/league. so time will tell, but today, he wasn’t quite there.

- parke…. you may not love seattle, but we love you. he was phenomenal tonight. we have him 1 or 2 more years? count them down b/c he likely won’t be here any longer.

- zakuani - add these types of goals to your somewhat regular breakaway goals?? you may be a 20 goal threat before you know it…. and i wouldn’t be too mad at that.

- nyassi - not sure i liked you on the left…. you didn’t do too much. please go back to the right.

- alonso - i have free weekends on 7/30, 8/14 and 8/21.  let me know when you are available for our first date.

i was sitting next to a very nice guy tonight although he was a soccer newbie. he had 100 questions for me… which i was happy to answer, but i was able to shut him up after this one… “who is the best player”. i said “that is not answerable, but watch alonso as much as you can and watch him break up the plays all game long…”   that shut him up from then on out and at the very end of the game he said… “wow, that was phenomenal. how can he not be the most important player on the pitch. he must have broken up 50 plays”.

i didn’t have any good logic to disagree with any of his logic.

- finally… thank god for keller and “that save”. due to that we would have been quite a bit more grumpy tonight.

KASEY KELLER   CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP.

all in all… results this week were pretty darn good. LA and SJ drew, rsl drew, and houston lost.

i hope the sounders aren’t just stringing us along, but they sure are giving us hope by clawing their way back in…. whatcha think?

from reading other match reports… it may have been nyassi with the assist, not riley. well, i haven’t seen a replay so i will take their word for it.

    damn yellow boots.

Likes? WE WON! Nkufo did exactly what I thought he would. He drew defenders which helped open up plays for Zakuani. Woo Hoo! Keller rocked!

Dislikes? I know this is beating a dead horse a bit, but the reffing was atrocious. Sure we all complain about calls, but the whole game? The game was rough. WAY to rough. Boring to watch. I much prefer a technical game over a “let’s see how many players we can get hurt” game. That ref totally lost control of the game.

Why isn’t Parke happy in Seattle?

  • d2bernhard

Good riddance Ljundberg. It was great last year; this year has been appalling at times especially with the incessant ref arguing. I will not miss that prissy face he makes when he is upset — signaling to all watching the end of his effort for that particular game. I am glad we worked him hard enough that he could diagnose his hypoglycemia, that is a huge plus for him for the rest of his life.

Ad far as the ref: Are we still on for all black on September 9 at QWest?

  • Mark

Because he has dreams of playing for Man U dancing in his head.  Parke thinks he is good enough to make millions, but he is only getting paid $99,999.97421.

    I ain’t saying he’s a gold digger, but…

  • MIKE

Did I miss something on this All Black thing? Is New Zealand visiting or something?

  • laurie

And Rapids still have no wins in the last four years after going down a goal.

  • MIKE

    0-48-16 what a record.

  • Steve

Yeah Blaise did a great job of distracting the D.  I don’t care if he gets a ton of assists or goals (I wouldn’t complain though), but he will play a key part in getting guys open up top.

The game was pretty rough towards the end.  Roger took a good hit to the head and Connor, oh many that was ugly.  He was bleeding pretty bad there and that was hard to watch.

Great game overall though.  We are 1 win from a playoff spot (with some help via a tie in the Col/Dal game or a Dallas win).  Lets get some revenge for last year’s embarassment in SJ last year!

We’ve gotta get our heads back in the match after we score. KC nearly made us pay earlier this year (thank again, Kasey) and I’d hate to see this become a trend.

You know when opposing teams have the ball on the Seahawks 40 yd line and you just know they’re gonna score? I thought we were gonna have a Seahawks moment late on last night. The last thing we need is a third Seattle team that behaves like a Seattle team.

Everybody keeps saying that, but… let’s be realistic.  Some sides have as many as FOUR GAMES in hand over us, and one in front of us has 3 games in hand.  We have a lot of work to do.

  • Steve

I am not disregarding that.  I know we have issues in that.  Sometimes a team just needs that though to take off.  So maybe if we can crawl our way into one after being virutally out, that might provide more of a spark.  Might calm down the negativity around the club.

  • Gee

The defense barely held at times in the second half.

  • MIKE

    Good luck with that.

  • John

About time we get some luck.  Both goals were very lucky (off the post then off the keeper’s back; the 2nd was offside but quite difficult to spot if it weren’t for the replay).  That said, the harder you work the luckier you get.

  • bud

Bitching about the ref is like bitching about the traffic.

  • bud

True.  Montero’s 50yd shots with 2 mins left were pretty foolish, considering he could have just waddled over to a corner and killed the game off.

  • Gee

But that shot was entertaining, unnecessary but entertaining.

  • DaveS

If the keeper was another yard forward we would have been talking about how brilliant it was.

  • Phil Smail

The win was great but there was a lot bad about our play. We’d have been spanked by any half-decent team
Scott was terrible, the guy just didn’t push up. Although Montero’s work rate was good he’d give the ball away after one touch and he made us look very sloppy. I have no idea what Sigi was doing ending with three players up front who need the ball placed at their feet/head and if they don’t have zero control

  • Joe

We’ve also played well and have been screwed out of two or three points. That’s the nature of the game, particularly in MLS. We’ve made some headway and are getting healthy again, but we won’t challenge for much until our midfield can put in a solid 90 minutes of possession and control. Last night we dominated at times and then would just fall flat in middle, particularly late second half.

  • D2Bernhard

the 40 yard shot tonight was not foolish
