Keller & Montero (& Ljungberg) Named All-Stars

Posted by Mike on July 27, 2010 · Under Former Players, Freddie Ljungberg, Fredy Montero, Kasey Keller, MLS · View Comments

Each year, a total of 32 players are named All-Stars in accordance with the MLS Collective Bargaining agreement. Previously, 25 players have been announced to this year’s roster, and today, MLS announced the final seven…

The additional list include Seattle’s Kasey Keller, Fredy Montero, and, yes… Freddie Ljungberg have been added to the squad.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen (Kansas City), midfielders Joel Lindpere (New York), Robbie Rogers (Columbus), and forward and Conor Casey (Colorado) round out the final group.

The three Sounders will be on the “Inactive” roster.

How Ljungberg makes it over Steve Zakuani? Sad.

I’m amazed that Zak didn’t make the list. Over Ljungberg, especially.

  • MIKE

I was just adding that as you posted that.

  • Steve

Zak is tied for 4th in goals, that is just amazing.  Oh well, none will show up, FL could if he wanted too.

Latest word is we may know more soon on FL.  A swedish paper quoted his agent as saying (through google translation) “It will take another few days than we get a definitive answer.”  6 teams interested (1 MLS, 1 English, 1 Italian, 2 unknown)

Thanks to Sounders Fan in the Seattle Times comments for the link below.

It be great, if FL gave Zak, his spot. But it probably doesn’t work that way.

i am not a conspiracy theorist… but try this one on for size….

garber gets freddie MLS all star status to increase his transfer fee and MLS gets more compensation.

very unlikely i know… but it is the first thought that popped into my head.

  • Steve

There is no reason for him being an all-star.  I am all for the conspiracy

  • Scott

HOW did FL fall from grace so fast with the Sounders faithful??? 1st of the season he was still golden… Now??? Don’t get it…

  • Alex

Does anyone else think the All Star game is a bit stupid.  I’ve never liked the fact that the MLS sides square off against international powerhouses.  I get from an MLS marketing stand point why they do it.  But, I just don’t like the idea.  The league isn’t necessarily showing off two squads of the leagues top.  Also given the fact many teams have CONCACAF commitments it adds more games into an already tight scheduling time of the season.

I don’t dislike the All-Star game idea in theory.  It just seems that there could be a better way to showcase the talent in the league.

  • yamsmos

i still like him… but if you think his level of play has been the same… i fully disagree

  • Alex y

Next year the mls board should bring Spain or England to play them

  • Pablo

I’m not a big fan of the MLS All Star Game, MLB All Star, or the NFL Pro Bowl. It’s ridiculous in all manners. Speaking on the CONCACAF Champions League. I’m a bit worried that our beloved Sounders will be pretty worn out by the time they play the San Jose Earthquakes. I figure Sigi will have a game plan with roster set up, but both game plans are to win. You want your best players to play in both games. It’s an honor to be able to play in the Champions League. To come out of that a Champion would be a “HUGE” thing for the Sounders.

  • Pablo

By the way, Steve Zakuani should have made that squad. It’s a shame, but he will continue to prove to the MLS that he should have been on that list. By the end of this season my prediction for Steve Zakuani stats is this: 11 Goals 6 Assists.

  • LJ

Okay so they made the squad as inactive… does that mean they don’t need to travel down for the actual All Star game?  I hope not, as I’d rather have them on hand for our home game vs. Metapan!

  • Jeromy

they will not be down in houston LJ that’s why Bruce arena had said none of the sounders were considered for the starting 11. Was nice they finally recognized seattle, was just a shout out to seattle thats all. our players will be at our tournment.

  • LJ

Well that’s a relief.  I had read that Sounders weren’t being considered due to our conflict, so it surprised me when I read they were added… but I’m glad to hear ‘inactive’ really means not attending.

Ljunberg is a complete joke. Cancer on the team. thank goodness he’s gone.
