Seattle Sounders FC have announced the signing of the club’s third Designated Player, Alvaro Fernandez, a midfielder for the Uruguayan National Team.

The rumors have been around for a week and were confirmed today via a release from the club.

The 24-year old Fernandez was under contract with Nacional in Uruguay and has 8 caps for the Uruguayan National Team. When asked to describe himself, he said, “I’m fast, I’m agile and I’m versatile.”

Uruguayan Midfielder Alvaro Fernandez Signs with Sounders FC
Played in Four 2010 World Cup Matches for Semifinalists

RENTON, WASH. – The Seattle Sounders FC have acquired Uruguay National Team midfielder Alvaro Fernandez, it was announced today. Fernandez, 24 played in four matches for semifinalist Uruguay during the recent 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Fernandez qualifies as the club’s third Designated Player. His signing will be finalized upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Fernandez has not yet been added to the active roster. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Fernandez started for Uruguay in the quarterfinal against Ghana and was a substitute in wins over South Africa, Mexico and South Korea. La Celeste took fourth in South Africa, its best finish since 1970. He has been capped 11 times by Uruguay-including appearances in six qualifiers-since his debut in 2008.

“I’m very excited to be playing in the U.S. because the football has grown a lot in the last few years and keeps getting better,” said Fernandez. “Seattle is beautiful and I think it’s the ideal place to be with my family. All these things helped in making my decision.”

“Alvaro is a versatile player who can play in a number of midfield positions,” said Sigi Schmid, Sounders FC head coach. “He brings good energy to the game as well as World Cup experience. He can score and also set-up others.”

Fernandez played the 2010 season for Chile’s Universidad. Universidad, located in Santiago, finished second in the Primera Division and is currently in the semifinal stage of the Copa Libertadores, the South American club championship.

Said Fernandez: “My goals are always the same whenever I join a team: try to help, on and off the field; help the club achieve its goals; and, obviously, win championships. I believe I can contribute through my experience. I describe myself as a fast, smooth player, who can play on either flank. I am strong in the air, and I work very hard.”

“Alvaro is experienced internationally and he has demonstrated a tremendous work rate and great tactical awareness,” said Chris Henderson Sounders FC technical director. “He likes to connect passes, possesses good pace and moves well off the ball.”

Fernandez earned his first selection by the Uruguay National Team while playing for Nacional. In addition to national team play, Fernandez has top-flight experience in Uruguay, Mexico, Portugal and Chile. In 2009 Nacional won the Uruguayan Primeria Division and reached the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores.

Fantastic!  Just curious now as to what the roster move will be.

  • Mark

    Hell yah!

  • Mark

Ljungberg to IR? Or has that already happened?

  • Ken

    Woohoo! Thank you, Adrian Hanauer!

  • Flizz

Welcome to Seattle, “Ahl-ba-ro”!  May you rack up many goals and assists as you continue to develop into a world-class player.

  • Pablo

SOUNDERS FC, HOORAH! After the win last night and now the signing of Fernandez, it just doesn’t get better than that! I think it’s time to purchase the Zakuani Electricity jersey.

  • Steve

FL can’t go to the IR if we him gone.  No one wants someone on the injured list.  Thats why he is just questionable.  If he isn’t gone, I look to Noonan as being gone.  96K and we have Montero, Jaqua, Blaise, Roger, Zak, Nyassi.  Just too much that can slide into a top spot if needed for a short time.

  • Randle

I’m not intimately familiar with the CBA, but unless I’m mistaken, we still need an international slot to fit him in. I’m curious what moves are going to happen in the coming days.

Never the less, I’m very happy with the FO not sitting on their hands and getting this done, pending ITC.

  • Steve

And for those of us in and around Ballard, we get to meet Keller tonight!  Good 24 hours for the men in green

  • Gee

our lineup is starting to look really dangerous

  • farley

Makes me want to get a #15 jersey with El Flaco on the back

  • yamsmos

    i’ll be there.

  • Alex y

Time to learn spanish zak and nkufo

  • Alex y

Ljungberg could be gone just haven’t annouced it is what I’m wondering but a great move by seattle

  • LJ

Any idea how soon his International transfer papers will be finalized?  I’m ready to see him on the pitch!!

  • Steve

JKH on IR allows one spot open for international players.  So we don’t have to worry about that until October when he is back (I assume FL will be gone by then….)

  • Steve

#15?  Is that a personal number or do you think that is what he will  get?

  • gstommylee

He will be wearing the #15 jersey as per soundersfc.com roster page

  • gstommylee

He’s now listed on the soundersfc.com roster page.  But he is not active player yet. A roster spot has to be opened for him.

  • Steve

That is new since I last was there.  I saw the article on there, but the roster spot hadn’t been put up.  Very interesting….  a #15 or a #9?

  • gstommylee

blaise is #9.  That’s just means he got international clearance and can be placed on the website but actually play on a MLS match there needs to be a spot open for him.

  • Randle

This Josh Mayers post helps clear things up a bit. At least with ‘El Flaco’

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/soundersfcblog/2012484363_sounders_fc_gm_adrian_hanauer.html

Gotta love Adrians’ press savvy sometimes.

  • RWDJr37

I’m willing to bet that FL10 is gone…and they are waiting on international papers for El Flaco.  Wonder where Freddie is going to end up?  Livorno?  UAE?  The above Noonan comment struck a cord as well…he hasn’t contributed the way Sigi had hoped methinks.

  • Ben

Is there a video of all of his world cup touches?

  • Me

    Christmas in July.

  • 18 da man

im down with this move lets kick some ass and enjoy some sounder futbol!!!!!!!!!!

  • gstommylee

Looks like they jumped the gun on putting alvaro ont he roster page cause he’s no longer shown on the page.

  • Steve

I reailze that.  I need to wait til the end of the year and see which DP I want to get a jersey of.  The tables may have flipped from Blaise to Alvaro though.
