A floating Edson Buddle goal in the 38th minute has given the LA Galaxy a 1-0 lead over Sounders FC after the 1st leg in the MLS Playoffs.

Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts came up big for LA. He recorded 8 saves, 7 of which were in the 1st half. Fredy Montero made Ricketts stretch for a shot in the 23rd and then tipped Montero’s header over the net a minute later. Ricketts also had to go low to the post to stop Nate Strugis‘s dead ball shot in the 42nd.

In the waning minutes, Nate Jaqua had a close encounter with Ricketts in the 87th, but the LA goalkeeper stonewalled the Sounders to head back to LA up 1 goal to none.

Sounders Central Defender, Jeff Parke, left the match early due to a sprained ankle.

The two teams will meet next Sunday at the Home Depot Center in the second leg which will determine who will advance to the Western Conference Finals. The Sounders need to outscore the Galaxy by one goal to force extra time.

Some one explain the off side rule as it applies to the 30th sec goal please!  I replayed the highlight footage over and over but guess I don’t know the rule as well as I thought.  All three of the last Sounders to touch the ball didn’t seem to be offsides unless a rebound off the gloves of the goal keeper is off sides.

  • LJ

I haven’t rewatched the replay at home yet (just what they showed on the tron)… but I believe that our player was in an offside position… when the shot was taken… but wasn’t involved in the play until after the deflection and scored off the loose ball.  I think it was the right call, but willing to hear what others thought.  Once the player was involved it’s considered coming from an offside position.

  • Ken

Whew, what a goal from Buddle and what a back line for the Galaxy. I hated they celebrated the goal — who was that shushing the crowd? — but it’s hard to say that they weren’t good for their lead. Not looking forward to the return leg next week.

  • Andrew

Law 11 (offside) is written such that the position of the player is considered at the time which the player on HIS team last touched the ball.  In this case, it would have been at the time of the shot and not at the time of the rebound.  I just watched the replay on the MLS website and we actually had two players off at the time of the shot.  Unfortunate since I thought we were the better team overall on the night.

  • DaveS

The players were in an offside position when the shot was taken, and they derived an illegal advantage on the rebound from that offside position.  That’s why the rule is what it is.

salazar has it out for us. is it not obvious? i’m not blaming the loss on him, just the terribly officiated run of play fouls. riley’s tackle on donovan early should have been a yellow, and knufo deserved his, but other than that, galaxy got away with 4 or 5 challenges that were bookable. montero’s yellow was laughable. i know i’m beating a very dead horse, but MLS has got to do something. it’s hindering the league.

  • Robert

OK, i’ll say this since nobody seems to want to do so:
    Keller misplayed the goal.
He saw Buddle with a clear shot.
He locked in, expecting the worst.
Buddle blooped it and Keller’s legs were slow to respond.
He didn’t move laterally, he just jumped.
OK, the offense didn’t bag any for us, so I’m not blaming Kasey, I’m just sayin’.

  • Mark

I blamed Keller at first.  After looking at the replay, I don’t think any goal keeper would expect the ball to curve that much.  Even Rickets said he didn’t think he could’ve saved it.  It was a wonder strike, give Buddle the credit, don’t blame Keller.

  • Jeromy

I blame the finishing gods on this one, we had this game, Galaxy got a 1 in a billion  shot off, had a couple other scares, but not much;galaxy did a great job messing with our mid field game but the sounders still dominated the field and control, just was unlucky not finishing those strikes on goal which were far more the galaxy gave. Salazar takes a HUGE reasoning for our bad form… the dirty playing that Dema Kovalenko was plain dirty and aweful, and by the time salazar did anything it was the second half and the sounders were already taken out of the norm game. Salazar is a disgrace, sounders just need to step it up next game and finish there shots on sides. GO SOUNDERS!!!

  • M

Gota step up for big games. Their stars outshined ours last night. Z and Montero got to be bigger. They both disappeared for good portions of the game.

Also why did we revert to the long ball again last night? What happend to the USOC Final play- just swing it aroung the friggen back until you get some space.

Also…will somebody shot the gdam ball? I dont even care where it goes…as buddle clearly demonstrated…when you shoot the ball, good things can happen.

  • DaveS

Yeah, kicking it into the air like maniacs has never worked for the Sounders.   And if they MUST use that godawful, hard-to-watch, frustrating strategy, they damned well better win the resulting 50-50 ball at least once in a while.  The long ball strategy is already shitty enough, but it is inexcusable if we we only winning the “50-50″ balls 10% of the time.

  • M

Agreed. We arent out of it yet. But if we play like Sunday night we sure are.

  • Barry Woslum

I think what I was most disappointed with was our fans.
For the first time EVER, it seemed like we were way more into booing LA than we were into supporting our guys. In the open cup, after C-Bus scored, we stopped for maybe 30 seconds. after the buddle goal, we shut up for the entire game (“you suck asshole” doesn’t count as support.)
After the game our fans booed.
This is the last time we get to see the team this year, and we booed. I was embarresed.

  • Jeromy

Barry, I heard the booing too but i believe that was directed towards the officials not the team, Most fans stayed to the very end of the game and when the game was called and the ref’s began to come off the field at mid field the boo’s began, and that’s who I interpeted they were for.

  • Anonymous

still, the boos outweighed the cheers. and we always cheer more than boo.

  • Mark

Not always… the boo’s were much much louder during the game that Keller got sent off.  I think it was so silent after the goal because we were all so shocked.  It came out of nowhere.

  • Z

Crowd was hung over….I hope. My section which is usually rowdy was….passive….I have better words for the fairweather soccer mom fans who stood all around me but I’ll save them.

  • Phil Smail

I’m not surprised we were quiet. One (rightly) disallowed goal, a terrible terrible ref and an LA team who ruined the game with their diving. The booing was definately at the officials. I was not in a good mood during the game and even worse afterwards

Don’t worry the MLS likes the smell of dead horses, because they do nothing about their lousy officiating.
