Sounders Draw at Columbus
Thanks to an early Fredy Montero goal and resilient defense anchored by Kasey Keller in goal, the Sounders will return to the Emerald City following a 1-1 draw in Columbus.
In the 7th minute, Erik Friberg crossed the ball from 30 yards out to Montero who headed the ball past Crew goalkeeper, Will Hesmer to put Seattle up, 1-0- a lead they would carry into halftime. It was the Colombian’s second goal on the season.
Columbus, entered the second half with a more offensive minded set and evened the match in the 67th when Patrick Ianni was whistled for a foul on Chad Marshall in front of Keller’s net. Emilio Renteria scored on the penalty kick and Seattle held on for the draw.
The draw moves Seattle’s record on the 2011 season to 3-3-4 (13pts) as they return to Qwest next Saturday for the first Cascadia Derby match against the Portland Timbers.
