Sounders FC announced today that backup goalkeeper Chris Eylander has been waived by the club.

RENTON, WASH. – The Seattle Sounders FC waived goalkeeper Chris Eylander, the team announced today.

Eylander, 26, made his first and only appearance in MLS on April 18, 2009, starting in a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA. He also played in a 4-1 U.S. Open Cup play-in victory over Real Salt Lake. He signed with Seattle on January 6, 2009.

With Terry Boss being named the backup ‘keeper, what does Chris Eylander do? As someone key in the USL Sounders, he only started the Chivas game back in April (the one Keller had to sit out due to the red card against the Wiz).

As yet another local product, do we expect him to be in the pool of MLS keepers or will he move on to another team? Granted, Eylander was on the MLS disabled list most of last season. Another local guy who spent most the last season on the bench, Ben Dragavon is with the Austin Aztex now.

It’s sad to see the connections to the USL Sounders quickly fade, but we wish Chris the best in what ever he does.

Sigi Schmid announced today that #2 Goalkeeper Chris Eylander will “probably get the nod” to start in goal tomorrow against Chivas USA.

When captain and starting keeper Kasey Keller received his red card in the 29th minute of Saturday’s game against Kansas City, Monroe native and Western Washington alumn Ben Dragavon was brought in for the final 60 minutes to protect the net.

Dragavon is not on the Sounders FC official roster- he’s part of MLS’s “Extreme Hardship” pool of goalkeepers. An MLS squad may add a player to their roster if they have less that two available goalkeepers or less than 15 available players. With Chris Eylander‘s knee sprain and limited training, Sounders FC had Dravagon on the bench.

Even though, Ben is a reserve keeper for the league he practices and trains with the team.

Seattle heads to Southern California to take on the Western Conference leaders Chivas USA on Saturday. This week Eylander should be back and able to practice at 100%. According to Sigi Schmid, “Eylander’s getting close. Who starts between Dragavon and Eylander, I’m not sure, but those should be our two goalkeepers.”

Eylander is supposed to start in today’s Reserve Game against the Portland Timbers.

We do know that whoever Coach Schmid starts, they will be making their first MLS start.

Sounders FC Sign Chris Eylander

Former University of Washington and USL Seattle Sounder goalkeeper Chris Eylander has signed an MLS contract to play for Seattle Sounders FC.

Eylander, 24, has spent the past three season with the USL Sounders and was named “Player of the US Open Cup“.

Of course this isn’t earth-shattering news. New head coach Sigi Schmid leaked this information last month on Fx Football Fone-In saying that he “will be able to work under Kasey for a year or two”

Eylander, the Sumner, WA native, joins Sanna Nyassi and Sebastien LeToux as members of the USL squad to earn an MLS contract with Sounders FC.

We’re very excited to have Chris join our team. I’ve seen him play at the University of Washington and I also followed his career with the USL Sounders. He’s a quality goalkeeper and a quality individual for our team.
