The 2010 MLS SuperDraft has come and gone. Seattle with their 3 picks showed their satisfaction with the current defense and the need to bolster the Sounders’ attack.

In the First Round, Seattle selected senior David Estrada a 5′8″ midfielder from UCLA. The #11 selection was a pick that surprised many folks as a number of analysts had Estrada being selected in the second round or later. Estrada, himself, noted that he wouldn’t be watching the draft until later because he wasn’t going to be selected in the first round.

Estrada holds the freshman goal-scoring record at UCLA and many feel that he is a perfect fit for Head Coach Sigi Schmid’s system- a common theme among all selections. He was an impressive performer in last week’s combine.

The second round pick, Michael Seamon, is a 6′1″ midfielder-forward from Villanova who impressed many during last week’s combine in Florida. Again his height, speed, and technical abilities seem to be a perfect fit for Schmid’s system.

Seattle’s final pick was the 59th overall selection- Jamel Wallace. The 6′1″ senior from San Diego St. had one goal and two points from his defensive midfield position in his senior year. A tri-captain, he started 15 of the 17 games he played, including eight of the 10 Pac-10 matches.

Seattle Sounders FC selected David Estrada with their first pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. The #11 overall pick is a 5′8″ midfielder from UCLA.

The Senior Bruin did not expect to be selected in the first round by many analysts and Estrada himself, he noted “I won’t be watching the first round, because I am sure I won’t be selected, but I will be watching online the second, third and fourth rounds.”

Estrada tallied 22 goals and 14 assists as a forward and midfielder for the Pac-10 squad including 3 & 7 in his senior campaign.

He was a 3-time all-conference selection and was invited to the u-18 National Team Camp in 2008.

Estrada is a talented player who I think Sigi Schmid believes can flourish in the Sounders FC system. Estrada was a superstar as a freshman and at the Combine he showed flashes of that ability.

The 2010 MLS SuperDraft will take place on Thursday from Philadelphia. The Sounders possess picks in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th rounds with the 11th, 27th, and 59 picks overall.

Seattle’s third round pick was shipped to Houston as a part of the trade that sent Patrick Ianni to Seattle.

What can an MLS club expect from a pick in the range of #11?

In 2009, Michael Lahoud, Kevin Alston, and Jeremy Hall were selected 10-11-12. Lahoud played in 16 games (starting 9) and tallied a goal and an assist with Chivas. Alston started 26 games at left back for the Revs. Hall played in 24 games for the Red Bulls at left midfield- starting 22 of them.

The 2008 SuperDraft saw Pat Phelan, Roger Espinoza, and Dominic Cervi go in the same 10 to 12 range. In their rookie seasons, Phelan played in 21 games (starting 13) for New England, Espinoza played in 16 and started 6 for KC, and Cervic who never signed with MLS and is currently the #3 goalkeeper for Celtic. The second season for these players did not see a noticeable statistical improvement or growth in numbers.

What should Sounders FC expect from their #11 pick? Clearly, the selections in this range are not SuperStars- or even super stars in the making. With the exception of Alston, this small sample are role players who serve a purpose for their respective clubs. I’m not saying that Sebastien LeToux and his energy & enthusiasm can be replaced, but should Sounders FC look to find a similar type Forward/Midfield player who can come off the bench and be a spark in MLS League games? The same player should be a definite and consistent contributor in US Open Cup and CONCACAF Champion’s League matches- especially in early rounds.

What needs should be addressed with this draft? In my opinion there are no glaringly obvious needs that can be solved with a #11 pick. Though the rumored uncertainty of Fredy Montero’s departure to Europe may find fans clamoring for offensive help.

Do Sigi and Adrian address a certain need? Do they go with the best available player? Do the draft a project? What do YOU think? Vote Below!

To get familiar with some names in the draft, Ives Galarcep has run a number of mock drafts for the upcoming SuperDraft, here are some of his players who in the 11th Pick range.

Jack McInerney (Forward | US U-17)

Andre Akpan (Forward | Harvard)

Amobi Okugo (Midfield | UCLA)

Austin Da Luz (Midfield | Wake Forest)

Dilly Duka (Midfield | US U-20)

Luis Gil (Midfield | US U-17)

The 2009 MLS Season is at a close and it is time to move forward to Seattle’s second year. The First Step is opening up the roster to possibly lose one player to the MLS newcomers, Philadlphia Union in theirExpansion Draft on Wednesday.

Looking at the Rules there are some bits of confusion- There’s no worrying with Steve Zakuani. As and un-graduated Generation Adidas player, there is no need to protect him or fear that he will be selected. But Freddie Ljungberg will be protected, but it is unsure if the Designated Player counts against the 11 or not.

Let’s say that Ljungberg & Zakuani do count against the 11, who do you protect? (select 11)

Discuss.

The Philadelphia Union will take the field on March 25, 2010 here in Seattle against Sounders FC. The Club’s Expansion Draft will take place on Wednesday, November 25th.

Here are the rules as released by MLS…

Senior Roster

Teams may protect 11 players between their Senior and their Developmental Roster.

If the Player’s contract expires at the end of 2009, he will still be considered part of the Team’s Senior Roster.

If a Team protects a player, it is not obligated to exercise the player’s option. It may renegotiate a new budget number for the player as in previous years.

If a player retires, he will not be a part of the Senior Roster, but his Team will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to play.

Developmental Roster

Players on a Team’s Developmental Roster, other than Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2009 season and Home Grown Players, will be part of the expansion draft.

Generation adidas players (who have not been graduated at the end of the 2009 season) and Home Grown players are automatically protected (teams do not have to use a protected slot on them)If Philadelphia selects a Developmental Player it must offer him a Senior Roster position and he must be on Philadelphia’s Senior Roster as of Roster Compliance Date.

International Players

Teams are restricted in the number of International player(s) that they may make available per the table set forth below.

For purposes of this expansion process, for US-based teams, any non-domestic US player would count as an International and for Toronto FC, any non-domestic US player or non-domestic Canadian player would count as an International.

Designated Players

Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player has a no trade clause in which case he must be protected.

Maximum Player Loss

Once a player has been claimed from a Team’s non-protected roster, that team is eliminated from the expansion draft and may not lose any further players.

Right to Renegotiate

Philadelphia will have the right to renegotiate a drafted player’s salary (either up or down) without having to place such player on waivers or giving his previous Team a right of first refusal.

Priority

On the first day of the Discovery/Allocation Period, Philadelphia will have priority over players who played professionally in the USL First or Second Division in 2009, subject to another MLS team’s right of first refusal.

Rounds

The expansion draft will be 10 rounds.

INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PROTECTION REQUIREMENT TABLE:

Teams may make available a number of international players equal to their total number of international players minus 3, provided that if a team has 3 or less international players it may make available not more than 1.
