Keller & Montero (& Ljungberg) Named All-Stars

Each year, a total of 32 players are named All-Stars in accordance with the MLS Collective Bargaining agreement. Previously, 25 players have been announced to this year’s roster, and today, MLS announced the final seven…

The additional list include Seattle’s Kasey Keller, Fredy Montero, and, yes… Freddie Ljungberg have been added to the squad.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen (Kansas City), midfielders Joel Lindpere (New York), Robbie Rogers (Columbus), and forward and Conor Casey (Colorado) round out the final group.

The three Sounders will be on the “Inactive” roster.

How Ljungberg makes it over Steve Zakuani? Sad.

Montero to Europe?

Fredy MonteroThe rumors have been floating since before he even dressed in the Rave Green kit- that Fredy Montero would head to Europe. And those rumors are back again.

Jose Romero has uncovered a story from a Colombian TV station that a transfer from the Emerald City to Europe is in the plans for the Colombian Striker.

No specific team or country is noted; though Montero would play for clubs in England, the Netherlands, Italy, or Spain.

Montero played in 27 games during the 2009 Campaign. He scored 12 goals for Sounders FC and added 7 assists.

Sounders FC Team Awards

From the Club… Seattle Sounders FC has announced its inaugural season Team Award recipients. Kasey Keller was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and Tyrone Marshall was honored as Defender of the Year, both by a vote of their teammates. Taylor Graham was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year and Fredy Montero received the Golden Boot by virtue of leading the Sounders FC in scoring. Read more

Montero, Ianni, Marshall still up for MLS Yearly Honors

The fields for Goal and Saves of the Year have been whittled down.

Patrick Ianni’s bicycle kick against the Houston Dynamo in Week 17 and Fredy Montero’s 30 yard shot at New England in Week 28 are two of the 10 Finalists for the Goal of the Year. Make sure to vote on MLSnet.

On the Save of the Year side, Tyrone Marshall’s scissor kick in Week 29 against the Columbus Crew saved a Steven Lenhart goal. Vote for Tyrone on MLSnet for Save of the Year.

Fredy Montero Wins Newcomer of the Year

We knew a Sounder had to win the award… Major League Soccer today announced that Seattle Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero won the MLS Newcomer of the Year award for the 2009 season.

Montero, 22, from Barranquilla, Colombia burst onto the MLS scene in 2009, leading the expansion Sounders FC in scoring with 12 goals while recording seven assists to tie for the second highest total on the team with Nate Jaqua.

Montero got off to a blazing start with Sounders FC, tallying two goals and an assist in the club’s season-opening win against the New York Red Bulls before a sellout crowd at Qwest Field and live national audience on March 19. He was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 1 and MLS Player of the Month for March after scoring four goals and tallying one assist in the opening month. Read more

Keller & Montero Cut Practice Short

Don Ruiz and Jose Romero both reported that Kasey Keller rolled his left ankle and had his Tuesday Practice cut short a bit.

Also, Fredy Montero did not practice due to a “low grade fever”.

Sounders Claim US Open Cup Awards

US Open Cup Final SoccerAlong with Seattle’s 2-1 victory over DC United to become US Open Cup Champions, a pair of Sounders also garnered personal awards.

Fredy Montero was named Player of the US Open Cup Final. Montero scored the first goal in the 67th minute.

The honors for Player of the US Open Cup Tournament went to Kasey Keller. Including the Play-in match against Colorado, Keller surrendered only 3 goals and 5 wins in 480 minutes. Along the way, he recorded two clean sheets.
