Montero’s 85th Minute Goal Sinks Red Bulls

Sounders celebrate Fredy Montero's goal. (by Andy Marlin/Getty Images )
Sounders Head Coach Sigi Schmid was trying to make a message by not starting Fredy Montero in Saturday’s match at New York. The Colombian came on as a sub in the 78th minute.
7 minutes later he scored the match’s lone goal giving Sounders FC (3-3-3, 12pts) their first road win of the 2010 campaign. Montero’s 3rd goal of the season started when Patrick Ianni (who was making the start for injured Ozzie Alonso) got fouled. Tyrone Marshall’s quick restart on the Red Bulls’ side of the half led Brad Evans’ who placed a magnificent cross to Montero in the 18. In a skillful play, #17 chested the ball down to his left thigh and then left-footed the ball past Bouna Condoul.
In holding the East Coast leaders scoreless, the Sounders defense anchored by Kasey Keller in goal posted its third clean sheet of the year.
The Sounders will host San Jose next Saturday at Qwest Field. [Tickets]

Sounders @ NY Red Bulls Preview

The Sounders head to the road to play at the new Red Bull Arena in an effort to erase memories of last Saturday’s 0-4 loss to the LA Galaxy.
Seattle (2-3-3, 9pts) looks to erase a 4-game winless streak, as the Red Bulls (5-2-0) look to recover from their 0-4 loss at San Jose. Over the past three matches, the Sounders have been out-scored 7-1.
This will be the fourth matchup in the history of these two clubs. Colombian Fredy Montero has scored three goals in those 3 games and Seattle fans look hopefully that the skillful forward will find the back of the net; something he hasn’t done in the past 3 matches. Read more

another 2 points lost
despite how calabro tried to spin it, i don’t think that this was a valuable point gained on the road. we played a poor team tonight, and it is fair to expect 3 points against them.
but you know what, i am in the middle of a fathers day weekend. and i am not going to let this get to me. i have a wonderful wife who has mad sure that i got to watch the sounders game at the pub with friend today, and that i don’t have to put our 3 year old to bed (which takes the better part of 90 minutes these days)
so i am not going to let this result get to me, and i am not going to spend a long time writing a recap. you all saw it. we outplayed yet another team and didn’t come up with all the goods. so i will keep this short (for once) and leave you with just a few things to think about. Read more

AMAZING, FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT, BEAUTIFUL
those that know me know that i tend to temper the good with the bad. i rarely get carried away with a really good performance and usually have something ‘constructive’ to say…
tonight. none of that. the sounders FC absolutely DEMOLISHED the ny redbulls in every part of the pitch. the 3-0 scoreline almost didn’t do it justice. we outplayed, out hustled and out classed them for 90 minutes. how sigi has a bunch of players that have never played together playing some fantastic football at times really shows his quality.
speaking of quality, enter fredy montero. when i met him on tuesday night, i said “welcome to seattle” to that he responded “i love seattle”. it was probably one of the few things in english he knew, but tonight we say back to you fredy ”SEATTLE LOVES YOU” Read more
